More Sense for Damiane and Oongka
As exciting as the announcement sounded to unlock two more playable characters besides Kliff, this feature seemed poorly thought out at launch. Even today, the two fighters are not a full-fledged replacement for Kliff, but Damiane and Oongka can be utilized better and more sensibly than a few weeks ago – thanks to the following adjustments:
- We already mentioned it: There is additional inventory space when unlocking a new character.
- You can summon Damiane and Oongka via a circular menu and use them as companions (this was not possible in the review version) as soon as you have unlocked them and they are available.
- For a long time, certain skills were exclusive to Kliff. With update 1.03, however, Damiane and Oongka finally received comparable counterparts, which helps immensely with puzzles in the world.
- New equipment pieces for both characters have been added to the game and their talent trees have been revised.
Difficulty – More Options, More Fun
Crimson Desert could be quite frustrating at first, partly due to some difficulty spikes that you could expect during the story campaign and in the open world of Pywel. Simple bears, for example, were initially tougher opponents than some bosses.
Testers also complained about the difficulty of various bosses. The original version of the Reed Devil, for example, made it a game to quickly chop Kliff down from 100 to 0 percent health with the many clone attacks in its totem phase. We could only defeat the original through extensive use of revival pills.
The fight against the story encounter Tenebrum in Scholastein was also annoyingly difficult, as you had to solve the associated puzzle before the fight again with each failure. The Quick Time Events, with which you could free yourself from opponents who had knocked Kliff over during battle, were also frustrating for a while – you only had one attempt for those and had to possess the reactions of a demigod.
With their updates, the developers have noticeably improved the balance of combat challenges. In addition, many food items grant more health than they did at the beginning, and you can buy more healing food from merchants.
Since patch 1.04, you can also choose whether you want to play Crimson Desert on Easy, Standard, or Hard. The three difficulty levels affect parameters such as damage taken, health of enemies, the window for counters, and more.
