The CEO of EA commented at a conference about the capabilities of AI in the development of video games like GTA 6 and Battlefield 6, explaining what they can really do.
Who is it about? Andrew Wilson is the CEO of EA, which published Battlefield 6 among other titles. At the Iicon video game conference in Las Vegas, he explained how EA views AI and shared the opinion of the CEO of GTA 6
publisher Strauss Zelnick.
Here you can see the roadmap for Battlefield 6:
AI as a Tool
What does he think about AI? The EA CEO believes that AI cannot develop complete games and serves only as a modern tool for development.
Andrew Wilson said: “Do you believe a 16-year-old can develop games like Battlefield, EA Sports FC, Call of Duty, or Grand Theft Auto in a garage? I really do not think that will happen anytime soon.”
However, the CEO is by no means an opponent of AI. On the contrary, he looks forward to the development of AI, justifying this with a historical comparison. At the start of YouTube, there were voices claiming that it would mean the end for renowned directors like Steven Spielberg.
While others believed that the interest in cat videos and thus in YouTube was finally over, the reality is different. Spielberg is still making blockbusters, and YouTube has produced many incredibly popular creators.
Wilson explained that AI-driven, user-generated content could be “very positive and very important” for the gaming industry, “but I do not believe that they will destroy the existing gaming industry.”
How does EA use Artificial Intelligence? Andrew Wilson stated at the conference that he had recently looked at the figures for AI usage at EA. About 85% of EA’s quality assurance work is currently done with “some kind of algorithm based on machine learning or artificial intelligence.”
In this area, the number of employees has even increased, and AI has been important for increasing efficiency.
That GTA 7 or Battlefield 7 can simply be created by a one-liner at ChatGPT or Gemini seems unlikely from the current understanding of the new technology. However, how the tools will develop cannot be predicted even for the CEO of EA. EA is reviving its cash cow shooter – 300,000 players on Steam show how well that works
