In recent years, there have been several MMORPGs that managed to raise significant sums through crowdfunding, yet still failed or are currently stuck in development. One of the few exceptions is the German-developed Albion Online. MeinMMO asked the Game Director what their secret is.
On July 17, 2017, Albion Online was released. The MMORPG from the Berlin studio Sandbox Interactive achieved what many genre competitors have failed to do over the past years: it is successful as a crowdfunding MMO. The initially small team opted for so-called founding packages instead of Kickstarter.
Over time, the studio grew and, unlike many failed crowdfunding MMOs, was able to maintain and build a healthy player base. But why does Albion Online succeed where so many fail? We asked the developers.
This week, exciting articles about MMORPGs await you every day. Included: nostalgic retrospectives, exciting analyses from renowned industry veterans, previews of upcoming online role-playing games, and entertaining streams.

A clear vision and target audience
We asked Sandbox Interactive why they are considered one of the few positive examples that succeeded with a crowdfunding strategy. The Game Director of the MMO, Moritz Bokelmann, provided an extensive answer.
He directly clarifies: There is no big secret or secret recipe as to why Albion Online has succeeded. For the studio, communication was crucial, and they followed the direction they wanted to take.
There is a sandbox, a lot of PvP, it is full-loot, and players and guilds create their own stories. It is a pretty hardcore approach, but we have clearly adhered to this vision and the corresponding target audience – and that has worked wonderfully for us.
Moritz Bokelmann, Game Director of Albion Online
Albion Online focused on a niche without trying to cater to everyone. Based on that, the MMORPG was further developed. They expanded the platforms and engaged with new potential players. But the approach to the game remained:
But Albion Online remains what it has always been – a player-driven sandbox game – and we are bringing our quite unique game to mobile platforms and console as it is – and not as a watered-down version tailored to an opinion on what an MMO should look like on such a platform.
Moritz Bokelmann, Game Director of Albion Online
Rather than jumping onto all platforms immediately, Albion Online initially focused on PC, then on mobile platforms in 2021, and since this year, the MMORPG has also been available on Xbox Series X|S – with better controller support and a visual overhaul. This led to player growth as platforms expanded and were compatible with previous ones.
But luck is also required
Over the past 8 years, Albion Online continued to grow, adding new content that expanded the target audience and opportunities for different player types. Be it PvP or PvE players, or people who like to immerse themselves in Albion Online either in groups or solo. However, it was also important for the developers at Sandbox Interactive that they did not change the core.
An absolutely unshakable core remains: the players are the story. The fact that everyone in the game has some influence on the world – and the endless possibilities that come with it – is something that is always at the center of our considerations. This is part of the vision for the MMO that I have mentioned a few times.
Moritz Bokelmann, Game Director of Albion Online
According to Bokelmann, it was only then that the large and loyal community that breathes life into the MMORPG and keeps it alive was created. But he also emphasizes that one is not successful solely because of the idea and development, luck also played a part.
One must say: without luck, such a thing does not work. We were fortunate to have the right people, at the right time, with the right ideas. The niche we chose, the Free-to-Play transition just before the onset of the unfortunate pandemic, a launch on mobile devices shortly thereafter – all this led to a steady influx of players.

The timing of the release was thus a relevant factor. Finally, Bokelmann emphasizes again that all this would not have been possible without the community. By involving the community and consistently pursuing their vision, they were able to be successful.
The special thing about Albion Online is that from the very beginning, they did not want to do everything possible, but focused on a core idea. This allowed players to know what to expect directly. By focusing on a vision, player feedback can be better implemented, as there are not countless issues to deal with.
At the same time, Albion Online used the time to expand the game idea, allowing them to gradually but organically attract new players without overwhelming themselves.
