You want to use your games on PC on Steam or other platforms not digitally? A user now shows how you can also use your games physically. Basically, you only need an empty SSD and an adapter to connect the SSD to your computer.
Sony will soon discontinue physical media, but PC gamers have long relied solely on digital games and content.
A user is now showing that it can be done differently: He has developed a cartridge system for Steam, where all games need to be “inserted” first. This way, he is using physical media on his computer again. He explains how it works and how you can easily recreate it.
Old SSDs converted to cartridges
What exactly did he do? Basically, it works like on a Nintendo Switch: When you connect the game to your PC, a script automatically takes you to the corresponding game page in your library on Steam, so you can start the title directly. In his example, he installed all games on used 2.5-inch SSDs. In another post, he explained that memory cards or USB sticks should work as well.
Additionally, the user has published all important data to be able to recreate the project as OpenSource: This includes the 3D data for the case, the cards, and the code that automatically recognizes the games. He himself stated that he sees it more as a hobby and does not want to make money with it. He said on Reddit:
This is simply my hobby. Over the years, I have built this Nixie clock, an automated OnStep telescope mount, a hydroponic tower with automation and monitoring sensors, etc.
It is simply depressing to view everything you do for fun from the perspective of earning potential. And in this way, more people can benefit from it.
What do you think? Would you use such a system or do you consider it a waste of money and resources? After all, the used SSDs could also be used sensibly elsewhere.
Sony is stopping disc production. The decision is heavily criticized, but it is unlikely to change. This is shown by the most important plant for disc manufacturing in Austria. Here, they want to retrain all employees for new products: Many hope Sony rethinks the end of the disc once again, but it is probably already too late for that
