Cyberpunk 2077 is a game full of people who are rarely completely morally black or white. V is also not someone who should boast of moral superiority. However, there is a resident of Night City whom MeinMMO editor Caro will never forgive for a particularly heinous act.
Cyberpunk 2077 often throws players and me into various dilemmas that are not easy to solve and are often decided by which path holds the least evil. My V is no saint and makes some decisions based more on feeling than on the correct behavior of a professional mercenary.
Therefore, I want to judge as few inhabitants of Night City as possible… With one exception: Wakako Okada, the “Lady of Westbrook” and one of the few major fixers in Night City.
It’s no wonder that the job of a fixer is only suited for the kind of people who can switch off their empathy like a switch to act lucratively and, as much as possible, to maintain their own reputation. But Wakako went too far for me.
With one action, she not only ensured that I and consequently my V lost all respect for her but also contributed to one of the worst and most tragic fates in Cyberpunk 2077, which makes me damned angry and sad every time.
Few suffer as terribly in Cyberpunk 2077 as Evelyn Parker
Wakako may have played a short but crucial role in the terrible fate of Evelyn Parker. The person V initially meets as a client for the heist at Konpeki Plaza hides a much deeper motivation and a tragic attempt to escape her own fate.
Evelyn is a so-called “Doll,” a sex worker with a chip that adapts her behavior to the wishes and desires of clients and erases her memory after the session. In both a metaphorical and literal sense, a doll, a toy.
After the Konpeki heist from the tutorial goes sideways, Evelyn ends up back with her Dollhouse employer at “Clouds.” There, she is silenced by a targeted virus from her own clients, the Voodoo Boys, because she knew too much about their plans.
She barely survived the attack, but her cyberware was so severely damaged that she became almost comatose. What followed made her one of the most tragic characters in the game for me.
Wakako makes one of the most heartless and soulless decisions, even for a Night City fixer
The manager of Clouds decided, after several attempts to repair Evelyn’s cyberware and offenses against her body, to sell the broken doll to a particularly slimy ripperdoc named Fingers. Without promising measures to restore her, Evelyn’s former employer handed over her body to the ripper as payment.
Fingers eventually contacted Wakako to secure a particularly lucrative deal – and Wakako, a woman with extensive connections, delivered.
She ensured that Evelyn was sold to the Scavengers, one of the worst kinds of gangs you absolutely do not want to encounter in Night City. They recognized the potential of an implanted doll chip and exploited Evelyn for the production of snuff braindances for the black market, forcing her to endure one unspeakable situation after another.
Only after being rescued by Judy with V’s help could Evelyn escape this torture, but only for a short time. Evelyn was unable to overcome the events and ultimately took her own life in Judy’s bathtub.
Wakako knew exactly what she was doing
Wakako had no ill will towards Evelyn and no other reason to sell her to the Scavengers than pure indifference. The Scavs are known for trading body modifications, cyberware, and organs on the black market, just as they produce snuff braindances.
Wakako’s base is unfortunately also located on Jig-Jig Street, where sex work and the dealing of increasingly extreme material is the order of the day.
She knew exactly what she was doing. And that makes her not only one of the most ruthless fixers but also one of the most heartless and coldest individuals in all of Night City, to whom neither I nor V will ever give any respect.
Perhaps it’s because she is a woman herself, or maybe it’s just the gut-wrenching staging of the game. But I will never be able to get used to Evelyn’s fate in any playthrough and always have to take a break after her story.
While some gangs decide to make some people’s lives a real hell without any remorse, there are also other groups that see it differently.
