Cal Kestis was only young when the massacre began, around 13 years old. The Padawan was aboard a spaceship with his Master Tapal when the clones turned against the Jedi.
Tapal had already sensed a disturbance in the Force beforehand and was prepared. He managed to kill some of the clones and flee with Cal Kestis to the escape pods.
The Padawan used the maintenance shafts of the ship while his Master sabotaged the reactor. Although the two managed to reunite and reach the escape pod, Tapal was gravely injured and died from his wounds. Cal Kestis managed to escape alive and landed on the planet Bracca.
