As a victim of bullying, the protagonist never found joy in life. He withdrew, became unbearable, and lost touch with reality. When he finally attempts a kind act, he dies immediately – only to be reborn as a baby in another world shortly after. As Rudeus Greyrat, son of a great adventurer, he still possesses the knowledge of his previous life and is able to learn magic and shape his body for adult life from a young age.
After a few years, he ventures into the world to make a name for himself and to uncover the secrets of this new world. In doing so, he battles against his old, flawed personality and strives to carve out a new place for himself in this world – until a magical disaster shakes his life once more, scattering everyone he has grown to love to various corners of the world.
What makes the series better than Sword Art Online? Mushoku Tensei is considered one of the best series regarding world-building. Few modern anime fantasy works have such a well-thought-out and detailed world in which multiple languages are spoken (and written). Languages that are not just gibberish but follow clear rules and have been deciphered by the community through meticulous work.
Together with a sometimes quite dark narrative that does not shy away from adult themes, the series is convincing.
However, Mushoku Tensei also has some aspects that are considered controversial. Especially in the first episodes, the protagonist is often hard to bear and behaves primitively. But the more one watches the series, the clearer it becomes that these flaws are part of Rudeus’s development, which gradually recedes into the background over time.
