Re:Zero has quite a few advantages over the anime Sword Art Online. More complex characters and a plot that is often not for the faint-hearted.

When Subaru leaves the supermarket, he can hardly believe his eyes. In the blink of an eye, he has been transported to another world – just like in the anime he loves so much! He believes he is chosen and is searching for his special power, only to be beaten up by a group of bandits and even die a few days later.
But Subaru does not die “for real”; he simply reappears at a point in the past and can reshape the course of the next days again. What sounds like a wonderful power quickly proves to be a source of suffering. Because everyone Subaru has met in the meantime has forgotten him again. And the pain that comes with death is something he does not forget quickly and gnaws away at his soul little by little…

What makes the series better than Sword Art Online? Re:Zero is essentially the antithesis to the power fantasy that many isekai series offer. While the protagonist is often overwhelmingly powerful, that cannot be said for Subaru. He is comparatively weak and must endure a lot of suffering. His factual “immortality” may seem like a blessing at first glance, but it brings him unimaginable suffering that only grows with each season. It increasingly eats away at Subaru’s mind.
On top of that, there is a plethora of characters, each with an interesting story and relatively free from typical genre clichés – even if it may not seem so at first glance. Because Re:Zero plays with these clichés and then breaks them again and again.
No wonder that Re:Zero had one of the best anime episodes of all time in its latest season.
