The two step-siblings Sora and Shiro are invited by the God of the gaming world – because in games, they are unbeatable. In this world called “Disboard,” humans are at the very bottom of the food chain, as the hierarchy is determined by games. However, humans lack both the magical abilities of the higher species and the unbeatable instincts of the animal hybrids (let’s be honest: furries).
But Shiro and Sora set out to conquer the last kingdom of humans through a game, aiming to defeat the other races and expand their influence. When it comes to games, no one can match the strategic genius of these two.
What makes the series better than Sword Art Online? It is primarily the way in which conflicts are resolved. In SAO, it is often the high character stats of Kirito that decide victory and defeat. In No Game No Life, however, it is the tactical understanding of the respective game. The anime relies on various “mind games” or cleverly exploiting gaps in rule systems.
The two siblings solve most conflicts with their razor-sharp intellect rather than raw violence. This gives them significantly more depth – without undermining the humorous character of the series.
However, the series also includes some ecchi elements – one should be prepared for that.
