Kazuma dies the most embarrassing of deaths: He wanted to save a classmate from an oncoming truck – but in reality, it was just a tractor that was going extremely slow. He dies of shock. Even the goddess in the afterlife laughs at him, but offers him the chance to be reborn in another world and take something special with him – a magical relic of his choice.

Insulted by the goddess, Kazuma makes a decision: He simply takes the goddess with him.

Together in the new fantasy world, they quickly expand their group with Megumin, a highly powerful mage with the strongest explosion magic in the world – but unfortunately, she can’t do anything else. Shortly thereafter, the heroic knight under the pseudonym Darkness joins them to serve as a tank – but unfortunately, she never hits with her attacks and somehow enjoys being beaten up too much.

The chaotic group tries to rid the world of the influences of demons, but they always seem to make everything worse and more chaotic…

What makes the series better than Sword Art Online? Konosuba clearly shows that there is no need for a large overarching plot that one chases the whole time. Konosuba excels with its lovable characters. Nearly every episode thrives on the dynamics between Kazuma, Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness, so the overarching plot takes a back seat. Even after several seasons, it doesn’t get boring to watch the four with their distinct personalities.

Konosuba even managed to impress the legendary US screenwriter Roger Avary (co-writer of Pulp Fiction, for example), who after the Konosuba movie praised: “That’s exactly what cinema was invented for.”
