The finale of Code Geass is an episode titled “Re;”, which will be remembered for many years. Because Lelouch breaks his promise to his sister Nunally and uses his Geass on her to obtain the key to the Damocles – a weapon with potential mass destruction power and the greatest threat in the series’ world. He makes this decision after Nunally announces that she wants to be the object of hatred on which the wrath of humanity unites.
The gigantic weapon was the only thing that had prevented Lelouch from enforcing his claims to literal world domination. Now, with Damocles under his control, the peoples of the world capitulate one by one and are integrated into Lelouch’s empire. He betrays everyone who ever supported him. Both former members of the royal family and the resistance fighters of Japan, as well as his sister, are chained.
But the big shock comes at a parade where Lelouch, as the new emperor, presents the defeated rebels to the public. For he is attacked. A person identifying themselves as Zero, the alias under which Lelouch himself had long operated as a terrorist and freedom fighter, stands in his way and stabs him with a sword in the chest.
What looks like Lelouch’s ultimate defeat was from the very beginning his plan. Because he wanted to unite the world under a dictatorship where he himself is the ultimate enemy – only to then let that enemy die and return freedom to the world.
