Violet Evergarden is a visual masterpiece. Each episode is full of fantastic animations, detailed backgrounds, and expressive faces – in addition to the beautiful emotional story.
There may be people who are emotionally hardened and cannot be moved to tears by “cartoon stories.” But even these people fail when they reach Episode 10 of Violet’s story.
In this episode, Violet is called by a noblewoman who has commissioned her to write a series of letters. The woman is a single mother of a young daughter who especially wants attention at that time. During the several days of her stay, Violet experiences the frustration of the young girl. Not only does she consider Violet a doll due to her monotonous demeanor, but she is also angry because Violet constantly occupies her mother.
Additionally, the mother is obviously suffering from an illness that heavily burdens the girl, who can only helplessly watch as her mother fights more frequently with pain – and yet prefers to spend time with Violet and her letters rather than with her.
When the girl’s emotions spill over and she accuses Violet of taking her mother away, despite the fact that they will have so little time together, everyone will feel the first lump in their throat.
It only gets worse when the series makes a time jump. In several sequences, we see what happens to the girl and her mother. The mother dies shortly after and leaves her daughter behind.
But every year on her birthday, the girl receives a letter that her mother wrote together with Violet. The letters are read one by one while we see how the girl grows to become a woman and then a mother herself, and the memory of her own mother is forever preserved through the letters.
Anyone who does not shed at least a few tears during this episode should urgently put their smartphone aside while watching the series – because they probably weren’t paying attention.
