Wizards of the Coast introduced a ton of new content for Dungeons & Dragons at GenCon 2027. For many, the highlight is that World of Warcraft is getting its own rule set, but one big news item received only a brief mention.
During GenCon 2027, the creators of D&D introduced a slew of content planned for the upcoming months and years. New rulebooks, adventures, expansions, and enhancements are planned by 2028, including:
- D&D Beyond, which will receive more features for players, such as an “Event Finder” to play more often in person at the table
- “Icons”, a collaboration with creators from the community to bring settings like Greyhawk and Dragonlance into the game
- more content for Arcana Unleashed with additional classes, backgrounds, feats, spells, and more.
However, particularly exciting is the “Universes Beyond” initiative, allowing beloved and well-known universes to be played and represented in D&D (“by fans for fans”). The huge fantasy world from Blizzard kicks things off.
A leak had previously revealed that WoW and Dungeons & Dragons are apparently collaborating. Now we have confirmation, and the announcement sounds even a bit bigger than expected.
The WoW Pen&Paper will have all classes and 11 new playable races
World of Warcraft comes as an “expansion” for D&D, meaning: Additional content will be released that is theoretically fully compatible with the core rules and vice versa. You should be able to experience authentic adventures in the World of Warcraft with this.
To that end, the authors have created tons of content waiting in the rulebook:
- There are 6 new and 3 revised subclasses that are supposed to ensure that you can play every class from WoW and even every specialization. There will also be “conversion guides” with tips for character creation.
- The playable species of D&D will be expanded so that all races from WoW are playable – including Dracthyr, Haaranir, and even Eredar (specifically: Man’ari), which in WoW are only a cosmetic option for Draenei.
- Some races will then come with “heritages”, such as elves, to better represent the different variations.
- Seven dungeons from WoW’s past will be playable (although mostly without dragons, presumably).
- There will be 26 new items (including famous artifacts like Ashbringer and Frostmourne), over 60 new spells, and over 50 new monsters, as well as professions, mounts, companions, and factions with reputation rewards.
Additionally, well-known characters from lore have been promised, both as allies and as foes. Specifically mentioned were Jaina and the Lich King Arthas, whom you can confront as a real raid boss in the Icecrown Citadel (as a digital adventure).
The rulebook will be released on November 3, 2026, in Early Access, on November 17 worldwide, and is available for pre-order now.

The most famous sorceress from D&D takes the spotlight, and this happens twice
For all who love D&D but can’t get into WoW, a “small” announcement might be much more exciting – one of my personal highlights from all the announcements: Tasha plays a bigger role!
If you don’t know her, Tasha, or “Iggwilv, the Witch Queen”, is one of the most powerful sorceresses in the D&D universe. She has defeated demon lords and created spells that are now part of the repertoire of many wizards, sorcerers, and bards. “Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything” is one of the most important expansion books of D&D.
Now she returns, but not as a character, rather as a near-divine being. In the new RPG Warlock, where you take on the role of the warlock Kaatri, Tasha will be your patron – the entity that grants you your power.
The first gameplay for Warlock will be showcased at Gamescom 2026.
Tasha’s daughter Drelnza, the vampire, will also be the BBEG (“Big Bad Evil Guy”) from the new Greyhawk adventure “Crown of the Witch Queen” – perhaps another reason to delve into the sorceress!
For those who find D&D too colorful, a brutal world is coming where Diablo looks like a meadow
The third major highlight of the announcements is Dark Sun, which hardcore D&D fans will likely already know. Dark Sun is a setting based on D&D but with its own rules, gods, and flavor.
It takes place on the post-apocalyptic planet Athas (not Arthas!), which has been transformed into a wasteland over centuries of destructive magic, where there is hardly any water or important resources to be found. The gods have left the world or have been killed, the wizard-kings rule, and it’s exceedingly brutal.
Magic itself, which is a cornerstone of D&D, destroys the immediate surroundings, making spellcasters generally hated. According to the creators, this is a world that cannot be saved – you just want to survive in it.
With a trailer, which we cannot show here for legal reasons, Wizards of the Coast sets the stage for the setting, which is set to release in 2027 during the aptly named Season of Survival
. Dark Sun will receive an expansion with an adventure book and will introduce a completely new class: the Psion.

Which of the announcements excites you the most? Which setting would you like to see implemented in D&D? Let us know in the comments!
Wizards of the Coast emphasized in our preview that Dungeons & Dragons is now more than just a game: a lifestyle that should bring fans together. That it is much more than just a hobby for nerds who meet in basements can also be confirmed by MeinMMO editor Alexander Mehrwald: Dungeons & Dragons fills a gap that my favorite MMORPGs have left
