In World of Warcraft one can fail at the World First Race – in a funny way. Method 1: Forgetting to pay the WoW subscription.
Professional raiders in World of Warcraft have it pretty tough. The bosses on mythic difficulty are usually so complex and demanding that you have to pay attention to many things at once, and a single mistake can already mean certain death. But you not only have to dodge effects, play your class correctly, and follow the raid leader’s instructions, but you also have to avoid another fatal mistake: Not paying the subscription costs.
This just happened to a pro from Liquid, who suddenly gets kicked out of the fight.
What happened? Like all major professional guilds, Team Liquid is currently fighting through the Void Pinnacle – the current raid of World of Warcraft for the World First Race. During the fight against the Lightblinded Vanguard, there was an amusing incident with the player Firedup. His stream was used to analyze the raid – when the stream suddenly froze and he found himself back at the login screen, with the message that his WoW subscription had just expired at that moment.
The reaction of his team colleagues was accordingly pronounced, as you can see here:
No subscription, because you pay with gold anyway
Is this staged? The suspicion of many viewers in the WoW subreddit is: This was intentional. After all, this is an incident that has repeated several times in the past, where players suddenly have their subscription time run out. It is easy to assume that this is intentional to gain attention. After all, professional players would have to keep a subscription active at all times.
But that is often not the case. Many of the professional players are literally swimming in gold and do not pay their subscription with euros or US dollars, but with the WoW Token – which has to be bought and redeemed anew every month. Additionally, most pros own multiple accounts and sometimes simply lose track of which of the accounts still runs for how long.
By the way, Firedup had already bought the WoW Token in advance – he had just forgotten to redeem it in time and probably overlooked that in the heat of the “World First” race.
Another problem in the race for the World First kills is cheaters and exploiters. Because once again, a notorious guild has struck and secured one of the coveted victories – with green and blue gear, which is mathematically impossible.
