In World of Warcraft, everything is currently about aliens and cosmic powers. But somehow, that has never been different, right?
Every few weeks, a larger post appears on the Reddit of World of Warcraft that expresses the yearning for old times. One wants stories like those that were told back then, with a world that was so different from today’s Azeroth. While much nostalgia can certainly have a place, one should sometimes ask themselves what exactly they are yearning for. Otherwise, it can become uncomfortable.
What’s in the post? It is one of those Reddit posts that one might initially agree with, smiling nostalgically. The player shoopstoop25 explains that he is getting fed up with aliens and cosmic threats. He longs for challenges that are somehow simpler. Like the dungeon Darkbreak, to fight against yetis, ogres, and imps.
A thought that one might first nod dreamily in agreement with – only to then narrow their eyebrows and ask confusedly, “Wait a minute …”
Aliens have been part of Warcraft – basically since forever
Where do the imps come from? Imps are part of the Burning Legion. That power of demons that wanders through the cosmos, infesting and destroying one planet after another. On Azeroth, they are not even native. Although nothing remains of their original world, imps appear on Azeroth only when summoned by someone or when a portal is opened for them – because they are not creatures of Azeroth.
Where do the ogres come from? Ogres are also not native to Azeroth. They came with the Horde during the First and Second Wars (Warcraft I and Warcraft II) through the Dark Portal and have since spread throughout the Eastern Kingdoms. They originally hail from the world of Draenor and established a large empire there. So they are also “aliens”.
What do you think? Are aliens an integral part of WoW, and is it perhaps impossible to have it any other way?
The community finds it hilariously amusing: The thread creator’s ignorance doesn’t go unnoticed, leading to many amused comments and already some memes being created as a counter to this post:
- “In the next patch, we are traveling to a troll island, consider your wish fulfilled.” – Rocketeer_99
- “Yeah, lol. 2/3 of his examples are aliens. But orcs are aliens too, so maybe we should just accept that in Warcraft, it’s a big world.” – DrainTheMuck
Cortyn says: I completely understand what the thread creator is trying to convey with his statement. With all the large, cosmic threats of the last expansions, many are longing for an Azeroth that feels a bit more primal and less “otherworldly” – and memories of classic dungeons with former threats resurface, even if those threats also involve creatures from other worlds.
After all, it currently seems that this is the direction that World of Warcraft is heading. Because if one considers all the hints, it seems that WoW is heading for a major “reset” and the era of WoW 2.0 is beginning.
