The world of Warhammer 40,000 has literally become a bit paler today: on June 3, 2026, it was announced that John Blanche has passed away. Blanche was one of the first employees and for a long time the Art Director at Games Workshop.

Blanche had been employed at Games Workshop since 1977, which had only been founded two years earlier, first as an artist, later as Art Director. There, he designed covers for White Dwarf, the publisher’s monthly magazine, but also for the very first British edition of Dungeons & Dragons, which was then distributed by Games Workshop.
Blanche’s style, often described as a mix of gothic, dark, bizarre, and “punk,” has significantly shaped the world of Warhammer. One of his most famous works is the Emperor on the Golden Throne, which apparently serves as the model for the new official depictions of the Emperor, even if all these representations are to be merely interpretations:
The main themes Blanche drew upon include wars and conflicts, particularly prehistoric ones in the early days. He also contributed artwork to “The Lord of the Rings.” In 1987, he won the “Master Painter” award at the UK Games Day.
Blanche worked at Games Workshop until May 31, 2023. He continued to sell his own works afterwards. A range of colors named after him is said to correspond to his style. According to statements over the last few years, Blanche struggled with illnesses. His wife Lin announced through Trish Carden on Facebook that he passed away at the beginning of the week on June 1, 2026.

The news of Blanche’s death has sparked many reactions in the community, as many fans seemingly had a strong connection to the artist and his works. On Reddit, for example, users pay their respects to him:

In a comment, a fan recalls that Blanche was literally John Warhammer, the humorous origin of the world. Another user writes that Blanche’s art has accompanied him throughout his life (on Reddit).
