By the end of 2025, two anime films were released in theaters, competing for the title of the best anime film of the year. One managed to generate nearly five times the earnings of the other film. However, it will start streaming later.
Which two films are we talking about? In autumn 2025, only a few weeks apart, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc were released. Both films adapted parts of their respective mangas into anime. Therefore, they will not be released as a regular season. At least that is the current plan.
During its runtime, Demon Slayer grossed over 741 million US dollars (approximately 634 million euros) (according to Box Office Mojo). This surpassed the franchise itself and landed at number 1 among the highest-grossing anime films of all time.
Chainsaw Man, however, had lower earnings. The film made over 162 million US dollars (approximately 138 million euros) and thus did not even reach a quarter of Demon Slayer’s revenue (according to Box Office Mojo). Nevertheless, it was well received by fans, including our MeinMMO editor Niko.
In this case, the race for the highest-grossing anime film was won by Demon Slayer. However, Chainsaw Man wins another race that is not about revenue figures, but rather about a specific release date.
One of the films is now available for streaming
When is the streaming release date for the two films? As Crunchyroll has now announced, the Chainsaw Man film officially starts streaming on May 1, 2026, on the streaming platform. The film will be available with a selection of subtitles and dubbed versions, meaning it can be watched both in the original Japanese with German subtitles and in the German dub.
However, there is still no sign of a release date for Demon Slayer. Although the film was released in theaters earlier, it is still pending. At least a release on Blu-ray and DVD is confirmed for July 29, 2026 (readable on X). At least something!
