At the Go Fest of Pokémon GO, you could challenge Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y over the weekend. Unfortunately, the hammer-hard challenge caused a lot of frustration. Niantic needs to learn from this for upcoming raid events.
Why the frustration? The Super Mega Raids with Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y were supposed to be the highlights at the GO Fest in Pokémon GO. On one hand due to the high difficulty of both battles, but on the other hand also because at the GO Fest, great rewards are promised – including a limited research focusing on the two Mega Mewtwos.
However, for many participants, the Mega raids turned out to be just frustrating. The currently strongest opponents of the Super Mega Raids use shields that must be broken with your own Mega monsters. Each trainer can break exactly one shield of the boss with their Mega monster.
In other words: If one or two teammates do not know what to do when and how, or if they simply make a mistake or act too slowly, the entire raid fails. The raid pass is still invested, however.
“Super Mega Raids are so unenjoyable”
Who is to blame? Over the weekend, various discussions arose in which players complained about teammates whose mistakes made the raids against Mewtwo X and Mewtwo Y unplayable. Player Some-Watercress-1144, however, points out another responsible party in their post on Reddit: the developers at Niantic.
Their argument: Niantic has not done anything to explain to the players at large how the Mega raids work. The developers must take into account that Pokémon GO is also played by young children and older people.
Boss battles are problematic, where one or two mistakes can mean immediate defeat, but also because Pokémon GO can quickly suffer from connection interruptions, especially in larger lobbies. This cannot be prevented from the player’s side.
How does the community react? Other players also hold Niantic accountable and hope for appropriate adjustments for future Mega raids.
- AshOSRS writes on Reddit: “I think there should be a slight delay for one-shot attacks when the shields go up. I was in so many lobbies today with 15 or more Megas, and yet the raid often came to a standstill at about 4 to 6 shields. In so many of my raids, my Mega was knocked out as soon as it entered the battle, even before I could tap the button to contribute to breaking the shield.”
- AmiableDingo complains on Reddit: “Super Mega Raids are so unenjoyable. Coming together for the raid is stressful because you hope enough players will join. The raid itself is stressful because you hope everyone uses their Mega Pokémon and knows they need to leave the raid to revive it if it faints. If you succeed and break the shield, the raid becomes so ridiculously easy because of the high player count that the victory doesn’t even feel like an achievement.”
- GS916 has on Reddit a concrete suggestion: “The raid should be automatically canceled if there are not enough Mega Pokémon in the lineup – this saves a raid pass.”
