Riot Games has built a multimedia empire from its MOBA hit League of Legends over the years, which has also appeared on screens for many non-LoL players, especially with the animated series Arcane. In addition, there are more service games like the collectible card game Legends of Runeterra or single-player experiences like Ruined King: A League of Legends Story.
Arcane has shown how much money Riot invests in its Runeterra universe to make it known to a broader audience:
Moreover, Riot Games is among the very few developers in the West who, due to the tremendous success of LoL, currently have the financial resources to create an ambitious online role-playing game. Given the value of the Runeterra franchise, they are likely doing everything possible to release a game that can excite fans. There won’t be a disappointing quick shot here.
In short: The foundation for a great MMORPG from the West for a strong IP is present at Riot Games. Just that is enough to fuel the hopes of many genre fans. There is hardly any concrete information about the project itself. Especially since it is said to have undergone a restart after the departure of lead developer Greg Street – and currently nobody knows what remains of Street’s plans.
I personally do not exempt myself from the anticipation for the LoL MMORPG. Especially the series Arcane has shown me what great stories can be told within the Runeterra universe.
