The fantasy anime Sword Art Online returns with a new anime. However, in the 110-minute movie, Kirito is not the shining hero but is suspected of being a player killer.
What kind of movie is this? Anyone who has anything to do with anime should know the premise of Sword Art Online. In the anime, the innovative virtual reality role-playing game Sword Art Online is introduced, played with a Nerve Gear.
It is a modern helmet that utilizes the brainwaves of users to transport all five senses into a virtual world, while the real body remains motionless in the real world. However, a villain exploits this to kill the players one by one.
The first 10,000 players can suddenly no longer log out. If they die in the virtual reality, the helmet delivers a fatal blow to their brain in real life.
In the movie Sword Art Online: Unanswered//butterfly, created specifically for the new video game, we now experience the story from the perspective of Emirun and Rex. Unlike the anime, the movie is rendered in 3D CGI and is part of the Ultimate Edition of the video game.
Normally, the series follows the experiences of Kirito and Asuna. The two try to survive this drama and grow closer romantically. However, the new anime film suddenly portrays the shining hero as a villain.
Kirito goes from hero to player killer
What is going on with Kirito? In the trailers and the story of the movie, Kirito is indeed portrayed as a player killer. This refers to a player who has attacked or killed other individuals. This means that they have also died in real life.
That Kirito is capable of something like this shocks Asuna and the new characters. Therefore, Emirun and Rex go to Asuna for swordsmanship training and try to find out what really lies behind this player killer incident.
Whether Kirito is really capable of such a thing can only be determined with the release of the movie.
How can I watch the movie? The movie is part of the Ultimate Edition of Sword Art Online: Echoes of Aincrad and will be released simultaneously with the video game on July 10, 2026. No release for streaming services or theaters has been announced yet.
Aside from Sword Art Online, the manga creator has also dedicated himself to other projects set in a virtual reality. His other well-known work will soon also be released as an anime: Sword Art Online is considered a pioneer of anime with questionable content, now the creator presents his new work
