Star Wars introduces in the 2nd season of the series Ahsoka a new lightsaber that suspiciously resembles that of Darth Maul. However, this version has received a crucial upgrade that can save lives.
What kind of lightsaber is that? On August 15, 2026, Disney released a trailer for the 2nd season of the series Ahsoka. In it, a scene can be seen where an as-yet unidentified character wields a special lightsaber with three blades.
At first glance, the weapon resembles that of Darth Maul, which has two blades, with the hilt in the center. The new lightsaber now has two hilts, so a middle blade has been added to Maul’s weapon.
What appears to be just a visual gimmick at first could provide a decisive advantage in combat. Not only does the lightsaber offer the dynamics of a double-blade, but thanks to the middle section, it could save the wielder from a mistake that cost Darth Maul.

A deadly weakness

What mistake are we talking about? We remember: Although Maul is one of the strongest fighters in Star Wars, he suffered a significant defeat in Episode 1. After his victory over Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan sliced the Sith in half, but he survived and was pieced back together during The Clone Wars.
In the series Rebels, there was a rematch between Maul and Obi-Wan in the episode Twin Suns
. In the duel, the Jedi mimicked the attack patterns of his old master Qui-Gon. This provoked the same reaction from Maul as in Episode 1. Obi-Wan knew how to counter it and attacked from above.
Thus he destroyed the hilt of Maul’s double-blade and split the weapon in two. The villain’s body was suddenly unprotected, allowing Obi-Wan to deliver the fatal blow.
With a third blade, as seen in the trailer for Ahsoka, that probably wouldn’t have happened. It would have likely deflected Obi-Wan’s attack. Maul’s mistake was that he held the weakest point of his weapon directly in front of his body.
Whether this new kind of lightsaber will appear more frequently or if only this one specific character will wield it is still unclear.
