According to industry insider Jason Schreier, Singleplayer blockbusters from Sony are reportedly no longer going to be released for PC in the future. A look at the release plans of the console manufacturer for PS5 is enough not to be too depressed about it.
What does Jason Schreier report? On X, the highly connected industry insider from Bloomberg writes that there was supposedly a Town Hall meeting at Sony on Monday. There, Hermen Hulst, the Studio Business CEO of PlayStation, apparently announced that narrative singleplayer games would only be published exclusively for PlayStation in the future.
This news would confirm a report from Bloomberg from March 2026, which already hinted at this shift in direction. Sony would thus return to old console exclusivity after 6 years of flirting with PC – at least regarding major PlayStation blockbusters. In 2020, they initiated this new direction with the PC port for Horizon: Zero Dawn, and further PC ports followed.
Saros is one of the few good reasons to currently get a PS5:
Back to the Roots
Why is Sony doing this? As of now, there is no official confirmation from Sony regarding Jason Schreier’s report. If the company returns to old exclusivity, it is certainly to strengthen the current consoles (currently PS5 and PS5 Pro) and to counteract the declining console sales.
In the past, one of Sony’s greatest strengths was to regularly release blockbusters that required a current PlayStation to be available at home. The strong sales figures of various console generations from Sony show how well this strategy has worked for a long time.
However, if titles like Horizon: Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, or God of War can eventually also be played on PC, the pressure to buy a console diminishes. From the player’s perspective, this is great, at least if the PC ports are good. However, Sony probably does not like the declining numbers of the PS5 generation.
Sony has recently raised the prices for the PlayStation 5:
The Golden Years Are Over
How does MeinMMO editor Karsten Scholz assess the renewed shift? In my view, the timing for the return to console exclusivity could not be worse. The days when Sony dominated the competition with Xbox with its numerous exclusive blockbusters are over.
Between 2019 and 2022, there were various reasons to acquire a PlayStation console, thanks to games like
- Ghost of Tsushima
- The Last of Us Part 2
- Days Gone
- Death Stranding
- Returnal
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
- Horizon Forbidden West
- God of War Ragnarök
- Death Stranding
- Gran Turismo 7
- Astro’s Playroom
In recent years, however, the frequency of PS blockbusters has noticeably decreased. Partly responsible for this are the increasingly longer development phases, but also Sony’s temporarily increased focus on service and multiplayer games (which are also expected to continue being released for PC to attract as many players to the servers as possible).
In 2023, there was Spider-Man 2, which followed on PC in 2025. In 2024, we had Astro Bot for PS5, which everyone must have played; it is that good. Death Stranding 2: On the Beach was released for both PS5 and PC in 2025. However, still PS5 exclusive are Ghost of Yōtei from last year, Saros, and the Metroidvania spin-off God of War Sons of Sparta from 2026.
What does the future hold? The next potential highlight is likely to be Marvel’s Wolverine in September. Additionally, major remakes for the first God of War titles and for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic are in development. However, it’s likely to take some time until their release. The same goes for Naughty Dog’s current blockbuster project (The Last of Us).
I don’t know how you feel about this. But for the current and probably upcoming offer of exclusive games, I wouldn’t currently spend 500 to 900 euros on a PS5 or PS5 Pro – or even more if you also want a second controller and a game. What do you think? Feel free to let me know in the comments! It seems that my colleague Jan sees it quite differently: I got the PS5 despite my powerful gaming PC, because I want to play 3 games
