Sometimes when rummaging through the boxes of your father, you might find a real treasure – especially if he was a fan of World of Warcraft who never opened a box.
With its nearly 22 years, World of Warcraft is one of the oldest MMORPGs still in existence in the world. And even though this contradicts all gaming clichés, there are now players from the early days who have had children who are now sifting through their parents’ belongings. This led to a discovery that will probably make many WoW fans envious:
A user on the WoW subreddit reports that while rummaging through the “old boxes of his father,” he made a very special find, which he also documented with photos: the original Collector’s Edition of World of Warcraft.
What was found? Twen0605 shows in his post two photos of a Collector’s Edition of World of Warcraft and writes:
I found this WoW Collector’s Edition at my father’s house while we were cleaning up, and he told me I could try to sell it. The problem is, I can’t find this exact version online anywhere because the back is blue. I’m not sure if that’s the original color because when I see others online, they tend to be more brownish. We live in Europe, so I don’t know if there is a difference to the US version or the servers.
Why does the version look different? There was indeed a little doubt about its authenticity since the shown back looks strange. Normally, the back has a darker, brownish tint and not the bright blue that is visible in the photo.
This is explained by the commentator “NeedsPraxis”: “OP, I am a collector who owns this as well. This is the original WoW Collector’s Edition. The back has faded from sunlight, that’s why it’s blue.”
Fortunately, the faded part is merely a thin cardboard that lies in front of the actual Collector’s Edition.
Collectors pay up to €6,000 if one can be found
Community responds enthusiastically and shocked: The responses from the community are quite positive. Many are happy about this find, while some also come to the realization that the box is now almost a quarter of a century old – and they have been playing the same game for that long.

Why shouldn’t you open the Collector’s Edition? If you plan to sell the Collector’s Edition, it’s a big advantage if it’s still sealed – even if the back is faded. Because what’s interesting about this Collector’s Edition is a code that you find inside.
The real monetary value is the code in the box. Never open the box, because most customers will only trust you if it’s still sealed.
This code ensures – in addition to the pure nostalgia of owning the box – that the Collector’s Edition can sometimes be traded for up to $7,000 (around €6,000) after now 22 years, at least in a sealed condition. This is because with the code you get access to three different pets that no longer exist in the game: a baby panda, mini Diablo, and a Zergling. These probably constitute the greatest value of the Collector’s Edition.
What would you do if you suddenly find such a Collector’s Edition? Would you turn it into cash right away? Would you let it sit for a few years, hoping its value will increase? Or would you just use the code for yourself?
In World of Warcraft, there are now a lot of things that have an almost priceless value. This applies not only to real collector’s editions but also to mounts in the game. We have presented some of the most expensive mounts from WoW here.
