Nosferatu

The quintessential vampire classic, which is loosely based on Dracula without having the rights to do so. However, the story is quite similar. A mysterious Count, called Orlok here, buys a house in Germany, while he himself still lives in the Carpathians in a castle.
The young Thomas Hutter has to travel there to clarify the fine print of the house purchase. Soon he is warned by the locals: The Count is feared. Why? Well, just think of Dracula, and you’ll have the answer.
Nosferatu remains an eerie masterpiece of early German cinema, the performance of lead actor Max Schreck has long been iconic, and overall, the film makes the vampire a very menacing figure. The newer adaptations are also worth recommending. Werner Herzog released his version in theaters in 1979, and only in 2024 did a modern version directed by Robert Eggers follow, which is more in line with today’s viewing habits.
