Horror movies are a popular film genre because they throw their protagonists into extreme situations and play with our own fears. In The Exorcist, a girl is possessed by the devil, leading to some pretty unpleasant situations.

- Released: 1973
- Director: William Friedkin
- Sub-Genre: Exorcism Horror
Allegedly, people fainted when this film was released. Thanks to today’s viewing habits, that probably won’t happen anymore, yet The Exorcist can still shock today with practical effects and a consistently tense atmosphere.
The story of the girl Regan, who is seemingly possessed by a demon, is touching and disturbing at the same time. At first, we get to know her as a sweet girl with a close relationship to her mother.
But at the latest, when she is bound to her bed, shaking the whole room, turning her head 360 degrees, or hurling abuses at the priests who attempt to exorcise her, the fun is over.
The Exorcist was the starting point for an entire series of thematically similar films, but none has been able to reach the quality of the original. Rarely has evil been portrayed so vividly in cinema, and whether the methods of religion can hold against it remains open until the end.
