PS5: Sony will soon release new games like Elden Ring or Dark Souls themselves

Sony acquired many shares in the parent company (Kadokawa) of the successful studio FromSoftware in 2024, also known as the developers of Elden Ring and Dark Souls. Now, a financial report revealed new details about how involved Sony will be in the development of upcoming projects.

What did I miss? Rumors had already been swirling in November 2024, that Sony intended to buy the parent company of FromSoftware, Kadokawa Corporation. Neither of the two companies wanted to comment at the time, but in December, Sony put its plan into action and purchased shares of the company for approximately €300 million.

Now, Sony is one of the largest shareholders, and with the new financial report from Kadokawa, it is clear what influence the Japanese company aims to exert after the purchases.

Future Elden Ring 2, Dark Souls 4, or Bloodborne 2 with Sony?

What does the financial report say? According to the financial report from Kadokawa, Sony will work closely with them. New projects are to be implemented and financed with the help of Sony – primarily films/animes as well as the creation of new brands.

The report states: “We will accelerate the creation and dissemination of intellectual property through enhanced collaboration with the Sony Group Corporation and secure funding through the group.”

Regarding games, Sony will mainly take on financing and distribution – just like with Bloodborne and Demon Souls. Contributing ideas or shaping games are not part of the company’s plan.
