In the world of World of Warcraft, there are iconic items that veterans can recognize from a great distance. A fan of the MMORPG was finally able to secure such a legendary piece after 20 years.
What is this legendary item? Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros is one of the first legendary items that Blizzard packed into World of Warcraft. None other than Ragnaros, the final boss of Molten Core, wields the legendary mace in battle.
However, it’s not enough to simply throw the Fire Lord back into the lava and hope for loot luck to add Sulfuras to your collection. First, you need to obtain two other items:
- the epic Sulfuron Hammer
- the legendary Eye of Sulfuras
By combining these two items, you will receive Sulfuras, the legendary hammer of Ragnaros.
What is the difficulty? You have the Sulfuron Hammer made by a blacksmith in the Blackrock Depths who has learned the recipe. For the crafting, you’ll need various resources like 8 Sulfuron Blocks, 20 Dark Iron Bars, 50 Arcanite Bars, 10 Blood of the Mountain, and more. Just the Arcanite Bars are worth a fortune in the Vanilla or Classic era.
With the Eye of Sulfuras, the factor of luck plays a big role. The legendary piece lands with a chance of only 3.74 percent in Ragnaros’s loot bag. Some Vanilla or Classic raids got lucky and were able to craft the Legendary after just a few runs in the Molten Core. Others have been visiting Ragnaros for many years, still hoping to eventually obtain the Eye.
Even in WoW Burning Crusade, there were great Legendaries like the Warglaives of Illidan:
“I’m still a bit excited”
A player has now had the luck: Although Sulfuras has been around for so many years, many collectors are still chasing this legendary weapon even today. This is shown in a current discussion on Reddit, where the player SJBaerosol is immensely happy to finally wear the Hand of Ragnaros on his back after 20 years: “I don’t care if I’m 20 years late to the party, I always wanted this and now it’s finally happened.”
The over 2,165 thumbs up and more than 115 comments underscore the status of Sulfuras. Many players are happy for SJBaerosol, although here and there their own envy shines through, as they have had no luck so far.
- Claudethedog explains: “I still get a bit excited when I see a Sulfuras or Thunderfury. Or, while we’re at it, a rich Thorium vein.”
- darkoopz43 writes: “I’ve been playing WoW for 20 years and have every Legendary on my belt, but this thing still eludes me – congrats!”
- christmascaked celebrates: “I admire the ambition. I got the eye in the week before the BC pre-patch after running MC forever, and I still crafted it. Why? Why should a healing paladin need it? Because it looks cool.”
- Gorstag remembers: “The random factor in WoW drives me crazy. Our guild had not a single Thunderfury, but we had about 8 or 9 of those hammers. The warriors started to collect them because the paladins had them all. We also often brought paladins from other guilds to raid BW, because I think we only didn’t get paladin shoulders once.”
MeinMMO editor Karsten Scholz wishes for Sulfuras to return: Not exactly this item. But legendary items that are special and that an entire guild can work towards for weeks and months. Items that are so rare and powerful that they make a difference.
Personally, I never minded that the Thunderfuries (in German: Donnerzorn, Gesegnete Klinge des Windsuchers) and Sulfuras went to other classes (I’ve always played a rogue in WoW). On the contrary, I like to think back to the times when we assisted someone from the guild in the battle against Thunderaan to complete his Thunderfury.
Of course, there’s also the other side of the coin: Such special items can cause a lot of unrest in a community. Players argue because they feel entitled to the item. Others get upset because it goes to a class that can do little with it. And in the end, everyone is in a bad mood because the owner of the Legendary switches guilds.
The comment by tossawayme1015by5 on Reddit hints at this: “I was lucky to get mine as a healing paladin during Vanilla WoW. It caused quite a stir, but that’s what DKP was there for!!” These DKP points were earned by participating in raids, and you could spend them on your desired loot. Some used the system to secure special items that would have benefited the raid elsewhere.
But honestly: Even this drama was part of the Vanilla and Classic experience and is somehow part of it. Better this than seeing everyone running around with the same gear. Or what do you think?
