Is there any achievement in your favorite MMORPG that you would love to accomplish? A player from Guild Wars 2 was able to achieve such a personal victory after 12 years. The community is astonished.
What kind of victory is that? The player Ev3nt1ne won a match in WvW with his team in Guild Wars 2 and secured the new “Salvaged Dredge Backpack” skin. The screenshot uploaded on Reddit is accompanied by the text: “It took 12 years.”
Ev3nt1ne refers the 12 years to the Spring and Autumn tournaments from 2014. Back then, servers competed in leagues for top placements and special rewards. However, in the following years, there were no comparable tournaments anymore because parts of the community took the competition far too seriously:
- Players and guilds gathered on the strongest servers to increase their chances of victory (server stacking).
- Aspiring guilds specifically recruited players from different time zones to exert pressure on opponents around the clock or to build a significant lead overnight. Some players also simply sat in front of the PC for hours on end to gain an advantage.
- The dominant servers became increasingly crowded, leading to long waiting times. Other servers, on the other hand, suffered from noticeable player flight.
- The competition was also overshadowed by the toxic behavior of various players.
The result of all these observations: ArenaNet refrained from holding tournaments of this kind after 2015, making victories in the weekly WvW rounds feel worthless for many participants. In recent years, it didn’t really matter whether you were the winner or placed 2nd or 3rd.
Winning is finally important again in WvW
What has changed? The developers have been working since February 2026 to introduce a new scoring system for their WvW area and thus new victory rewards. In this blog post on guildwars2.com, they presented their plans.
On April 28, the developers provided an update in the official Guild Wars 2 forum, stating that various changes had been made for the beta test on May 1 – based on tester feedback. The focus is primarily on how players earn points during a WvW match and what rewards are available for the winner. The developers explain:
As we mentioned in our original announcement of the points updates, we are introducing match rewards for the second beta test! To qualify for these rewards, you must reach the Platinum tier of the Combat Reward Track; please note that you do not have to complete the Platinum tier – it is enough to reach it by completing the Gold tier. At the end of the weekly matchup, you will receive rewards based on your team’s placement.
For this first rollout of match rewards, we are keeping things simple, and there will be no significant difference between first, second, and third place. However, if you finish in first place, you earn the new skin for the Salvaged Dredge Backpack; and if you can snag three of them, you can combine them into an upgraded version. Additional rewards include gold, WvW combat tickets, progress on the reward track, and more cosmetic WvW items.
Ev3nt1ne is thus one of the first winners of this new WvW experience.
How is the community reacting? They are celebrating the screenshot with over 1,045 thumbs up and many comments.
- Tormentor jokes under the picture: “I didn’t even know you could win in WvW.”
- graven2002 expresses a hope: “Hopefully, this doesn’t burn people out like the tournaments in 2014 (I doubt it, because these rewards are nice, but not necessarily crucial and can be repeated more easily).”
- Distinct_Breakfast97 reminisces: “I still have my golden Dolyak from the time when Blackgate won the first season. The golden age of WvWvW. An amateur server from North America hiring professional import guilds from EU servers.”
