With the update “The Only Way”, Guild Wars 2 is bringing new features to the table. MyMMO editor Alex had the chance to preview the content for you and is especially excited about one change.
What kind of update is this? On May 12, 2026, the update “The Only Way” will go live for the expansion Visions of Eternity in Guild Wars 2. It brings along various new features and content such as:
- 5 new story chapters where you will face the Inquest and their leader Vloxx
- A new map called “Eternity Garden”
- 2 new mastery ranks “Tactical Maneuvers” and “Residual Mirror Magic” to make your life in Castora even easier
- 6 new expansion relics
- 2 new legendary accessories that provide you with really cool visual effects, which you can earn through PvE content or the WvW mode
- A new meta-event called “Chains of the Ancients” that will test your teamwork
- Trainable otters as companions for rangers
But I am particularly intrigued by one change because, for me, mounts are among the best features of the MMORPG. And with this update, a foundation could be laid for something that other genre representatives have long done better.

Mount Skins as loot for the first time in Guild Wars 2
With “The Only Way”, a new raptor skin called Swiftwing will also be introduced (you can see it on the cover image). You won’t be able to get it as usual through the real-money shop, collections, or the wizard’s vault, but for the first time in the history of Guild Wars 2 as loot. You can acquire it by participating in the finale of the new meta-event “Chains of the Ancients” and bringing along a bit of luck.
Additionally, you can also trade the skin for the first time with other players, allowing you to pass it on to friends or sell it if you already own it. Just keep in mind that you cannot put it in a guild chest.

This opens a door for Guild Wars 2 that many other MMORPGs regularly walk through, adding a certain allure, especially for enthusiastic mount collectors and completionists like me. There is a thrill in repeatedly facing certain content in the hope of finally getting the skin.
While it’s considerably more predictable and understandable to earn different skins through collection tasks or by completing quests for the vault, the expectation of farming loot is simply part of a good MMORPG experience for me. That the developers are now opening this possibility for mounts as well gives me hope that this is just the beginning and that we will be able to hunt for and share many more skins together in the future.
What do you think of the new feature? Do you prefer hunting mounts or their skins as loot instead of completing tasks and collecting points? Or does this change concern you more?
