The new season of Path of Exile 2 aims to completely revamp the game, focusing on the endgame. A post by Maurice Weber now explains how well this is working for players.
What kind of update is this? With Return of the Ancients, the developers of Path of Exile 2 have pursued a clear goal. The endgame is meant to improve, and everyone should feel it. They have addressed the criticism that the endgame felt disjointed and that clear objectives were missing.
To solve this issue, new quests have been added with the expansion, serving as a kind of introduction to the endgame. Those who thirst for even more goals can gradually fill the individual progress trees of the various endgame activities and unlock better loot bonuses.
The layout of the endgame map is no longer entirely random; it is divided into various directions, providing clearer objectives for players. The developers’ plan seems to be working out well.

An update that robs your sleep
How is this being received? Return of the Ancients has been playable since May 29, 2026, making it more than two weeks now. Accordingly, the community has provided initial feedback. Among them is Maurice Weber from GameStar, who can currently be seen on Twitch five times a week.
On X.com, he shares his conclusion: Rarely has a game made such a giant leap as Path of Exile 2 with its latest update. AND IT WAS ALREADY GOOD BEFORE. But previously, the endgame always lost me at some point. Now I pull all-nighters. Just one more map, honestly
!
Other players feel the same in the comments. For example, LustigeMemes87 writes on X.com: Wow, the addictive factor is out of this world. The endgame has been done really well. The economy regarding currencies is also successful. Farming and crafting don’t end after 5 days. And when you’re done, you just create a new character. Only melee combat is frustrating
.
Looking at the numbers on Steam, the ARPG has only lost about a third of its peak players two weeks after the update (Source: SteamDB). A good figure, considering that not much has changed content-wise this time.
The developers of Path of Exile 2 have succeeded in keeping their players engaged with their expansion without a mega content patch, instead focusing on an improved endgame. This is evident as even the biggest haters can be convinced: Path of Exile 2 is now so good that it even convinces haters with 10,000 hours in the predecessor
