In Apex Legends Season 9 is here, and once again, certain weapons have proven to be particularly good or bad. We at MeinMMO present to you the three top guns that should always be taken along and three total flops that will hardly help you win a single battle royale match.
What weapons are there? After 9 seasons filled with updates and new features, there is now an arsenal of 26 weapons in the battle royale shooter Apex Legends. The weapons are divided into various categories and use a total of five different types of ammunition. Thus, there are pistols, assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, and sniper rifles.
But which weapons are best for the final victory in battle royale and arena? And which guns should you only use in the absolute worst-case scenario?
How was the selection made? I consulted various tier lists for Season 9 and incorporated my personal experiences as an Apex player into the decision.
The Top 3 Best Weapons in Apex Legends
These three weapons should not be missing from any arsenal. If you find one of them, make sure to incorporate it into your loadout.
Why are the craziest weapons missing? We are focusing here on weapons that you can regularly find in the game. The weapons exclusive to care packages, such as the Kraber and the Prowler, are not included here, even though they are all extremely good.
The M600 Spitfire – A machine gun that shoots and shoots and shoots …
What kind of weapon is this? The M600 Spitfire lives up to its name. It is a lightweight machine gun that fires heavy ammunition and has a massive magazine.
What makes it so good? As already mentioned, the Spitfire has a gigantic magazine. Even without any mods, it has 35 rounds in the magazine. For comparison: that’s how many rounds other weapons have – if at all – at the maximum magazine level. The capacity of the Spitfire theoretically goes up to 50. If you play the mechanic Rampart, it’s even 57 rounds!
Moreover, it does a decent amount of damage per hit. This means you can happily keep firing with the Spitfire and shred your opponent. Even with full red armor, no one will stay standing for long before going down. 11 hits should suffice.
Since most weapons in Apex Legends have very small magazines and you need to reload often during combat, the Spitfire offers a reliable rain of bullets where you don’t need to worry about reloading.
How does it perform in the arena? Particularly for the new arena mode from Season 9, the Spitfire is especially good, as the large magazine is advantageous in the intense battles. However, since the Spitfire is quite expensive with upgrades, you should only indulge in it in later rounds to dominate the endgame.
What should you pay attention to with the Spitfire? The reload time and fire rate of the Spitfire are not optimal. If you do need to change the magazine, find a safe spot. Or play Rampart, as she reloads machine guns faster.
Ideally, fight with the Spitfire from a medium distance; in close combat, you’ll be at a disadvantage against rapid-firing weapons. And remember that with the heavy Spitfire shouldered, you move slower than with other weapons. For add-ons, you primarily need larger magazines so you can keep shooting more.
The Bocek Bow – The new star in the game
What kind of weapon is this? This is a bow that fires arrows. But the Bocek is not a primitive thing from the Stone Age; rather, it is a high-tech weapon with unique new features.
What makes it so good? The Bocek is a sniper weapon and has several clear advantages. The weapon deals high damage at range and impresses at short distances with its fire rate. When you fully draw the bow, the arrows fly quickly to the target and hardly drop off at range.
Additionally, the arrows are silent and can even be retrieved, as they stick in walls. Furthermore, you never need to change the magazine, and even without upgrades, the Bocek is useful.
How does it perform in the arena? Due to its high versatility – the weapon is suitable in close combat as well as at range – the Bocek is welcomed in the arena. Only the high price makes the bow a candidate for later rounds.
What should you pay attention to with the Bocek? With the Bocek, you have the choice of whether to fully draw the string or to fire the bow half-drawn. The former deals more damage and is optimal for long shots. Half-drawn, the bow works well as a close combat weapon, especially with the upgrade Shattercaps. This causes the arrows to split, giving a sort of shotgun effect.
If, however, the relatively long reload time of the arrows bothers you, then use the upgrade Deadeye’s Tempo. This speeds up the subsequent shots with full draw.
R-99 – The nasty little lead sprayer
What kind of weapon is this? The R-99 is an inconspicuous, almost primitive-looking submachine gun. Yet this little thing packs a punch! At close range, the R-99 fires so many bullets that even heavily armored opponents can be vaporized in seconds.
What makes it so good? The major strength of the R-99 is its absurd fire rate. Specifically, this means that the R-99 empties its entire 20-shot magazine in just over a second and deals 11 damage per hit. Just one burst is enough to shred almost any opponent. At close range, there are hardly any weapons that can match the R-99.
How does it perform in the arena? Since the arena often favors battles at medium and close range, the R-99 is ideal for players who like to get up close and seek out close combat. The R-99 rewards players who like to play aggressively and don’t lose their nerve in the endgame.
What should you pay attention to with the R-99? Make sure you hit the opponent well, as the magazine runs out quickly, and then you’ll be left with an empty weapon. Larger magazines help here, ideally the gold magazine. This automatically reloads your weapon after a short time. This is ideal if you have a second weapon and simply switch to it until the R-99 is full.
The Flop 3 Worst Weapons in Apex Legends
The following weapons should be left on the ground if there is a better alternative available. Sure, you can still get a kill with a Mozambique in a pinch, but it’s usually not advisable.
30-30 Repeater – There are simply better weapons
What kind of weapon is this? The 30-30 Repeater is a precision rifle with a repeater mechanism. It fires heavy ammunition, and when you aim with it, you can charge your shots for 35 percent more damage. The weapon is not completely useless, but there are simply weapons that fill their role better.
What makes it so bad? The 30-30 Repeater has a low rate of fire, and its projectiles drop off significantly at range. Additionally, it lacks scopes with really good zoom.
The weapon is ideally usable at medium range. However, the Bocek Bow and the G7 Scout are the better choice there. Or you could go for really strong sniper weapons, like the Sentinel. Furthermore, the weapon must be reloaded shot for shot. If you want to refill the whole magazine, it takes a very long time.
How can you still make a difference with the 30-30 Repeater? The individual reloading of the weapon is a blessing in some situations. Because if you need just one or two bullets in a fight, you can quickly reload them and keep shooting. If those few shots are sufficient for you, it may be better than the longer reload time of other weapons in the game, where the entire magazine is swapped out.
Additionally, the repeater can alternatively function like a shotgun with the upgrade Shatter Caps. You then have a weapon that performs well at both medium and close range. But overall, there are always much better weapons for the respective role, for example, a combo of a real shotgun and a proper sniper rifle.
P2020 – Can’t do anything even with upgrades
What kind of weapon is this? The P2020 is an extremely boring pistol. The gun looks dull and lacks anything special. Only under certain conditions can you achieve success with it.
What makes it so bad? The P2020 is simply a weak pistol that holds 12 rounds and deals mediocre damage per shot. Otherwise, the weapon can do nothing and is truly inferior to every other weapon. Nobody needs the P2020 if there is anything better available. Since the Hammerpoint Rounds upgrade was removed in Season 9, even this damage buff for the P2020 has fallen away.
How can you still make a difference with the P2020? There is only one situation in which the P2020 is truly dangerous: in the early game when no one should have shields yet. If you also aim well, you might be able to shoot an opponent with the P2020.
Mozambique – Deliberately bad
What kind of weapon is this? The Mozambique is a shotgun-pistol that neither really shines as a shotgun nor as a pistol. The weapon is so bad that it became a meme and there was even a time when characters not only dropped a Mozambique when switching weapons but angrily threw it into the wild. In an interview, the developers themselves even said that the Mozambique was intentionally made to be bad so there would be a lousy weapon in the game.
What makes it so bad? The Mozambique is too imprecise for a pistol and too weak for a shotgun. You need three body shots to kill an unprotected opponent, and often you miss wildly with it if you don’t get very close.
Previously, the Mozambique was still deadly thanks to the Hammerpoint ammunition as an upgrade. But in Season 9, this upgrade was removed, which has dampened the weapon’s strength.
How can you still make a difference with the Mozambique? Despite its clear weaknesses, the Mozambique has been slightly buffed in Season 9. It now has 6 rounds in the magazine, which might allow you to achieve the three deadly hits. Additionally, the spread is now tighter, and if you get close to your opponent and land a headshot, the Mozambique could grant you a few immensely satisfying kills in the early game.
Interestingly, the Alternator and Mozambique were the first weapons I achieved my initial successes with in Apex Legends at launch. But those days are long gone, and now in Season 9, there are many cooler weapons, features, and equipment.
