Nevertheless, Call of Duty remains a force in the video game market, captivating millions of players even with CoD: Vanguard, and in 2022 it brings back a setting that likely appeals to most series players: Modern Warfare, or CoD MW.

CoD MW 2019 was the most successful paid title of Call of Duty so far and will get a sequel in 2022 – Modern Warfare 2. Although we at MeinMMO weren’t allowed to play in advance, we got a comprehensive insight into the game thanks to a large developer presentation.
We present the 5 most important innovations from the presentation in detail here and provide further background information. We also hint at what to expect in Warzone 2 in a small outlook.
Warzone 2 is considered an extension of CoD MW2 and uses the same technology. The Battle Royale is expected to be announced later this year but currently has no release date. It will likely again be a free-to-play shooter.
1. Artificial Intelligence – Realistic Behavior
NPC soldiers are a fundamental support of CoD games. However, they have never been known for their intelligence. They were merely a means to an end – after all, you need enemies in a story shooter. And that’s exactly what CoD was all about in the beginning.
With Modern Warfare 2, the entire system has been revamped and significantly improved. Additionally, NPCs are expected to play a role in more and more multiplayer modes – and also in Warzone 2.
To this end, the developers analyzed combat tactics together with trained fighters and adapted them for the NPCs. This includes things like:
Body language
Environmental and spatial exploration
Behavior outside of combat
This leads to a completely new behavior of the computer soldiers, which is quite impressive.
The NPCs no longer just walk along a corner. They check the field of vision beforehand and carefully examine the rooms. Their detailed animations make everything look very lively.

2. Water – A New Core Feature of CoD
CoD: Cold War from 2020 already tried water gameplay, but did not emphasize the feature much. Modern Warfare 2 takes it a step further and officially declares water to be a core feature of Call of Duty.

The developers have repeatedly emphasized that all these features and the technical foundation will also be part of the new Warzone: smarter NPCs, water mechanics, better vehicle feel, more movement techniques, an elaborate gunsmith, new equipment – a lot is in store.
Even if nothing sounds really “revolutionary” or “groundbreaking”, it’s these changes in gameplay detail that determine the feel of a shooter and make a big difference.
This is especially true in a battle royale like Warzone, which takes a more sandbox approach. Every little action, every small mechanic expands my possibilities and allows for new tactics. And with a look at the innovations, I see good prospects.
CoD MW 2019 was the most successful Call of Duty to date, and I find it fitting that the developers are not trying to reinvent the wheel here. It’s “just” going to be a little smoother.
