Normally, there is always a specific Pokémon in the research breakthrough, which is exchanged monthly. But since December 2022, things have changed – there are now several options at once. This also applies in February 2023.

What’s in the breakthrough? There will be 6 possible Pokémon instead of just one.

They are:

• Galar Pantimos: A rather rare monster that has primarily appeared in the form of event spawns so far. It is said to be able to appear as shiny.

• Botogel: This one doesn’t appear constantly, mostly around Christmas time. Botogel will also be available as shiny.

• Kindwurm: Is no longer so rare, but brings a very strong evolution, Brutalanda, which is among the best attackers in the game , and is always a good catch. It is also available as shiny.

• Kapuno: It has long been one of the rarest monsters, but is now also more common. Still: An exciting catch for everyone who missed the little dragon.

• Coiffwaff: Is also available as shiny and is also something for collectors: Here there are different forms that one can catch from this monster.

• Viscora: Evolves into Voscargot and Viscogon, but is also quite rare and can currently mainly be caught through 10 km eggs. This dragon monster is currently not available as shiny.

The research breakthrough runs in the form of a “lottery”: You randomly get one of these monsters per research breakthrough when you have collected the seven stamps – with no influence on which of the 6 monsters you receive.

This is the Rocket takeover: In Pokémon GO, everything is currently about Team GO Rocket.

• Giovanni has brought Registeel, a new Pokémon
• There is a special research for the Rocket takeover

Sierra with Crypto-Tanhel is the most exciting opponent, say trainers

Why do trainers want to fight Sierra? Sierra brings the new Pokémon Crypto-Tanhel with her. This is a very popular target among trainers, as its evolution, Metagross, is one of the strongest attackers in the game.

Additionally, some players are after the shiny variant of Crypto-Tanhel, which can be obtained with luck from a battle with Sierra.

She seems to be the primary target for players right now:

What about Cliff and Arlo? With Crypto-Magnezone, we arrive at Cliff, as he now has Crypto-Magnetilo with him. The crypto version of Magnezone may be surpassed by some other electric Pokémon, but it is still among the best electric attackers in the game.

This makes it a good candidate for raids and Cliff certainly remains interesting:

Can I choose the boss? Only to a certain extent, as which bosses appear at your stops or in Rocket balloons is ultimately left to chance. However, if you are looking for a specific boss, such as Sierra, you can ignore the Rocket encounter with “wrong” bosses.

This allows you to search for the right bosses at a later time or at another PokéStop. A Rocket Radar will only be consumed when the battle against Arlo, Sierra or Cliff is finished. So you can easily click on the encounter and check who is hiding there.

Team GO Rocket steps into Pokémon GO. The villains come with new monsters – what can you expect at the event?

When does the Rocket takeover start? The Team GO Rocket takeover started on Wednesday, February 1 at 00:00 local time. It runs until Sunday, February 5, 2023, at 23:59 local time.

It is thus embedded in the current “High Voltage” event and also runs on Community Day with eF-eM in February.

What happens in the Rocket takeover? The villains from Team GO Rocket will generally appear more frequently at PokéStops and in balloons. Additionally, there will be a few other bonuses.

How strong are the new Crypto Pokémon for the Rocket takeover?

Which new Crypto Pokémon are coming? Niantic officially announced 5 new Crypto Pokémon for the takeover. They are

• Crypto-Registeel
• Crypto-Alola-Vulpix
• Crypto-Spoink
• Crypto-Elezeba
• Crypto-Wattzapf

As a result, the following Crypto evolutions will also come into play:

• Crypto-Alola-Vulnona
• Crypto-Groink
• Crypto-Zebritz
• Crypto-Voltula

Which monsters are worth it? From the announced monsters, none are particularly strong for raids or arena battles, they do not currently make it to the list of best attackers in Pokémon GO.

However, some of them have a niche in the battle league. User “JRESeawolf”, PVP analyst from Pokémon GO Hub, and user “ThePokeGOHunter” have joined forces to share an appropriate analysis in the subreddit “TheSilphRoad”:

In his analysis, JRE47 provides insights into the monsters in PvP. You can find his complete analysis here (via reddit). We summarize the results here:

• Crypto-Registeel is a good monster in the PvP league, but regular Registeel is even better, as being a Crypto weakens its strong defense, which is what makes the monster in PvP.
  • You can find the normal Registeel in raids, here are the best counters against Registeel in Pokémon GO.
• Crypto-Voltula is described as a “glass cannon”, which already does not excel in defense – so the loss does not make a big difference. However, it benefits from the damage bonus and is a strong monster for the Super League.
• Crypto-Alola-Vulnona is interesting in two forms: as an ice attacker for the Super League, and with “Knuddler” as a fairy attacker for the Super League and Hyper League. For JRE47, Alola-Vulnona is the most exciting Pokémon in PvP from the new selection.
  • Additionally, Crypto-Alola-Vulpix would also be interesting for smaller cups, with CP limits of 500.
• Crypto-Zebritz is categorized as “nice to have” and can be interesting in certain situations in the Hyper League. But it is not a top candidate.
• Crypto-Groink is considered uninteresting for the PvP league according to JRE47.

It remains to be seen which other monsters will show up in the Rocket takeover.

What makes Crypto Pokémon special? Crypto Pokémon have a few peculiarities:

• You can only obtain them from the Rockets.
• They have an attack boost of 1.2, dealing 20% more damage than normal monsters.
• At the same time, they lose defense and are defeated faster.
• They cost more stardust when leveling up.
• They always know the Charged move “Frustration”, which is not particularly strong. This can only be removed at certain events with a Charged TM – as is the case now with the takeover.
• You can redeem Crypto Pokémon. Then they lose their attack bonus but get an upgrade to their IV values and cost less dust when leveling up. However, it is often worthwhile retaining them in their Crypto form for the bonus for many strong attackers.

Finally, Pokémon GO announced another event: At the end of February, Rayquaza returns for the “Proto-Growling” event.

Who is Giovanni? As in the anime, the members of Team Rocket also cause quite a stir in Pokémon GO. Besides the numerous thugs, you will occasionally encounter the bosses Arlo, Sierra, and Cliff, as well as their leader Giovanni.

However, he uses the upcoming Rocket takeover on February 1, 2023, to acquire a new legendary Pokémon for his team: Crypto-Registeel. What you need to know about the new monster by Giovanni’s side and whether it’s worth it, we’ve summarized for you below.

When can you get Crypto-Registeel? The new legendary Pokémon in Giovanni’s team will be available in the game from the start of the Rocket takeover on February 1, 2023, at 00:00 local time. This will take place as part of the current high-voltage event.

What kind of Pokémon is Registeel?

Registeel is a legendary steel Pokémon from the 3rd generation of games. It has no pre-evolutions or further evolutions. So far, you could find Registeel in its normal form occasionally in level 5 raids.

Is there Shiny Registeel? Yes, in principle, you can encounter the legendary Pokémon in its shiny form. You will recognize it by its green body. As a Crypto Pokémon in Giovanni’s team, however, it will not be available as Shiny for the time being, according to current information.

How strong is Registeel: Registeel can mainly score with a strong defense value. In terms of stamina and attack, it is significantly weaker. For this reason, it is less interesting for use in raids, and you should rather rely on the best attackers in Pokémon GO.

However, the legendary Pokémon can score well in the GO Battle League and leads the list in the Super and Hyper Leagues. For this, it is best to use a moveset of Lock-On, Focus Blast, and Flash Cannon (via pvpoke.com).

Is Crypto-Registeel worth it?

Use in Raids: As a Crypto Pokémon, Registeel will benefit from a 20% attack bonus, which simultaneously lowers its defense. However, this bonus will not be enough to make the legendary monster interesting for use in raids. There are still stronger candidates that you should prefer in battle.

Use in PvP: As a strong candidate for the GO Battle League, Registeel is already one of the favorites. However, its Crypto variant will be somewhat weaker in PvP battles due to the reduction in defense compared to the normal version.

Should you get Crypto-Registeel? The legendary Pokémon is particularly interesting in its Crypto variant for trainers who want to register it in the Pokédex. If you are looking for a strong candidate for use in raids, Crypto-Registeel is not the right address.

Since it can also be found in its normal form in the level 5 raids during the Rocket takeover, it is advisable to secure a corresponding specimen for the GO Battle League. This way, you could save the coveted Super Rocket Radar for another legendary Crypto Pokémon.

If you currently still have a Super Rocket Radar, you should consider quickly getting a strong Crypto Mewtwo instead. But beware, Giovanni will only have it in his team until January 31.

How to get Crypto-Registeel?

If you still want to secure a Crypto-Registeel, you need to search for Giovanni and fight him. If you win the battle, you will receive a number of rewards, including an encounter with the legendary Pokémon.

How to find Giovanni? To do this, you first need to secure the special research for Team GO Rocket from the current season to obtain a corresponding radar.

This research will be available in the game starting with the Rocket takeover and must be called up by no later than March 1, 2023, at 10:00 local time. However, once you start it, you will have unlimited time to complete it.

Through it, you will receive the necessary Super Rocket Radar to track down Giovanni. However, you must first fight against a number of Rocket thugs as well as against the bosses Arlo, Sierra, and Cliff. We will show you how to find them in the following video:
