PC cases primarily serve to protect the installed hardware and ensure optimal airflow inside. Beige as the only color and boring design are a thing of the past. Nowadays, a case can also look stylish and cool.
Why is glass used as a material? As gamers place increasing value on aesthetics and RGB lighting in their favorite hobby, case manufacturers have long embraced this trend and offer various designs with tempered glass panels in their portfolios.
This way, all components equipped with LEDs in the computer are clearly visible. Fans, motherboards, graphics cards, and even cables shine in various colors and are expertly presented.
It’s all about the glass
Nowadays, glass is used as one of many components in many technical products. This includes smartphones, touchscreen terminals, and, of course, glass side panels for PCs.
Typically, so-called tempered glass is used. In online shops, retailers often use the English term “Tempered Glass” in product descriptions.
Where does the term come from? This type of glass gets its name from the special manufacturing process. During production, mechanical stresses in the material are deliberately created through a heat treatment at several hundred degrees and rapid cooling. Thus, it is tempered, making it more resilient and shatter-resistant to external influences such as frontal impacts and shocks. Even large temperature differences pose no problem for tempered glass.
So why do glass side panels seem to break so easily?
On reddit, many users regularly report their “exploded” glass panels. It does not really explode, but it can definitely shatter if you are unfortunately close to the computer at that moment.
What is the difference in this situation compared to normal glass? If the tempered variant is overloaded or mishandled, it breaks into a thousand cube-shaped pieces. These glass pieces are usually not sharp-edged and reduce the risk of injury. Unlike normal glass, which often leaves long sharp shards.
Hard floors turn glass side panels into crumbs
Why is the substrate crucial? In many posts on reddit, gaming PCs with destroyed glass panels are found on hard tiled floors.
In most cases, users remove their side panel from the PC case and place it directly on the floor in front of them. Due to its structure, impacts to the front usually go without consequence. The “Achilles’ heel” here are the edges of tempered glass. They do not share the resilience with the shatterproof material surface.
When the outer edge of the glass touches the even harder floor, the material gives way and shatters. Contact with a glass table can also spell the quick end.
Improper handling pays off
Why is handling crucial? Occasionally, the glass side panels are connected to the case with screws within the material. A rubber layer protects the glass from damage at this point. If the screws are tightened too much, the rubber layer can shift, causing the screws to create cracks or scratches.
This affects the tensile stress in the glass, and it can break immediately, sometimes even after weeks, due to minimal influences that would normally have no consequences.
If the side panel slips from your hand while removing it, even a fall from 10 cm onto less hard floors can be the last thing the glass panel experiences.
Damage without external impact
Can tempered glass break on its own? Rarely, but not impossibly, there are circumstances inherent to the glass that lead to a spontaneous “explosion”.
Due to manufacturing defects in the heat treatment process, uneven stress across the glass surface can occur. Inclusions of chemical impurities can significantly reduce robustness.
Tips against “exploded” side panels
Finally, here are a few tips to help give your “Tempered Glass” a long life:
- Place your computer on “soft” floors and surfaces. Carpets as well as wooden surfaces give way more than tiles. A wooden table or an extra cushion as padding is extremely helpful.
- When removing a side panel, lay the PC on its side. This prevents the panel from slipping from your hands.
- If the panel is attached with screws, do not tighten them too much. This prevents damage that could lead to glass breakage.
