The latest heroine from Overwatch has quite a bold design. However, the player community believes: It has a dark background.
In 2026, Overwatch aimed to ramp up production and release more heroes than ever before. So far, this has been successful, and the next character has been introduced. Shion is an Omnic that apparently “lives” in Japan, but she drastically deviates from the previous design of robots in the Overwatch universe. Many believe she would fit better into the dark setting of Cyberpunk 2077 – especially when considering the implications of her design.
But you should probably check out the trailer for yourself first:
What is unusual about Shion? Shion is an Omnic. This is the robot species in Overwatch that has gained its own consciousness and has since fought for equal rights as humans. However, not all Omnics are peaceful. Some may try to live harmoniously with humans, but others resort to armed violence.
There are a few characteristics shared by all Omnics:
- While they have roughly humanoid body shapes, they usually appear rather androgynous (like Zenyatta) or the design is based on their primary function (like OR-15 or Bastion).
- Omnics do not speak with mouth movements. Most Omnics simply do not have a mouth; their voice comes from speakers usually located in the robot’s throat.
In these two aspects, Shion differs from previously known Omnics:
- She has a clearly feminine body with wider hips and recognizable breasts.
- She has a detailed face capable of expressing clear, human emotions: eyes, mouth, tongue – even if her voice still comes from her throat.
- She has small details that would typically be unnecessary for an Omnic – like painted fingernails (or even fingernails at all) or more pronounced canines (and teeth in general).
- Her movements do not appear mechanical and jerky, but fluid, and her posture is confident.
Community suspects that Shion’s background is dark
What does the community say? In the Overwatch subreddit, Shion’s design is being hotly debated. Some celebrate the design, while others think it would have fit better into the world of Cyberpunk. However, the most exciting discussion, with active participation, revolves around the implications of Shion’s design. The assumption is rather straightforward: Shion was designed as a servant or even sex robot, as you might know from Cyberpunk or Detroit: Become Human – or many other dark sci-fi works.
Player LordVaderVader describes it this way:
We know from her lore description: “Once trapped and controlled by others, she now reigns over all with a frightening sense of self-confidence.”
This implies that in earlier years she may have been used as a robotic guardian or servant, perhaps for the Hashimoto clan, before gaining awareness through awakening.
Although there is currently little information available, these details suggest that Shion was originally developed as a type of companion robot meant to attend to the needs of the owner, which unfortunately also includes intimate needs, before gaining autonomy through the Omnic awakening.
I’m not sure if this interpretation is correct, but if Blizzard is seriously attempting to incorporate such a dystopian theme through subtle hints, I would honestly be surprised. That’s a much darker implication than I usually expect from them when exploring something in their character design.
This idea finds a lot of approval. Because apart from 94% upvotes with over 2000 votes, there are also many comments that appreciate this idea:
- “That’s a really good guess, and I love the idea. I think they designed her this way on purpose, obviously because it’s appealing, but also for her story. In her trailer, she appeared crazy, and every time she spoke and fought Sojourn, she was laughing – she probably isn’t quite stable mentally, and there are probably reasons for that. One of those reasons could be that she was used as an object for more than one purpose before her awakening.” – quirally
- “I also mentioned to someone who asked why she has a mouth if she doesn’t speak from it. All Omnics have served a clear purpose, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this one looks like a pretty woman.” – SlipperySlimyTerry40
However, not everyone agrees, as some say this wouldn’t fit with Overwatch:
- “Overwatch would never use such a plot, haha. This topic is way too ‘adult’.” – Klienje123
Another possibility is that Shion has purposefully modified her body to appear more human – which would definitely be advantageous in conversations and combat situations with humans.
Cortyn says: I find Shion’s design quite cool. At first, I also thought that it looks somewhat odd for Overwatch Omnics, and the connection to Cyberpunk was immediately apparent.
While I don’t think Blizzard will ultimately confirm that Shion has a rather dark past as a companion bot or something similar – we will hardly get more than a vague suggestion allowing for multiple interpretations. However, one must also say that the trailer has simply made the world of Overwatch larger and now shows an Omnic who apparently has more human features.
Of course, there is also the chance that Blizzard just wanted to introduce another “hot” character into the game to ensure that skins sell like hotcakes – but contemplating the implications of Shion is exciting, and it has at least the potential to give the Overwatch universe a slightly darker touch.
