DragonSword: Awakening impresses the YouTuber TheLazyPeon, known for MMORPGs, with its gameplay. This is a complete success for the developers, as they looked back on a rocky history before the launch on Steam.
What does the YouTuber find good about it? DragonSword: Awakening started in South Korea as a typical open-world game in anime style, but with gacha mechanics. However, just a month after the release, the development team separated from the publisher.
After the separation from the publisher Webzen, the development team at Hound13 decided to remove all gacha mechanics from their game and release it on Steam. And TheLazyPeon also appreciates this:
- You get the complete game for a one-time purchase, and progress depends solely on playing and grinding, not on your wallet.
- There are no daily time barriers like missing stamina or banner pulls.
- There are universal in-game materials to unlock characters. They can be used for any hero.

There’s also a thumbs up for the strategic combat system. There is no pure button-mashing, and status effects unlock powerful tag-team attacks. Further praise goes to the vibrant world and the focus on mounts.
The move away from gacha mechanics is well received
Why is it respectful to your wallet? In gacha games, once your own items are empty, you have to buy more materials in the in-house shop with real money to get more banners. This gives you the chance to get certain characters. However, there is never a guarantee that you will get a specific character.
Additionally, there is a natural limitation, such as through stamina or energy, which does not allow you to progress further in the game. But this can often be circumvented – namely with real money.
You can imagine that sometimes horrendous sums come out of it when you spend a lot of time with your favorite gacha game. Such big investors are also called whales. That such mechanics have been removed and it only remains at the purchase price pleases the YouTuber immensely.
