Console players are currently considering switching from the PS5 to PC. This is mainly due to uncertainty about the future. Sony’s decision to eliminate discs particularly unsettles many people. Even potential exclusive titles seem to be less enticing than before.
Sony will officially bid farewell to physical media in 2028, and this announcement caused a small earthquake in the community. Many players are uncertain about the future of the PlayStation platform. This uncertainty also leads to more console players considering switching from their traditional platform to PC.
Because the PC currently promises greater security, even if it initially seems associated with higher costs. However, the PS5 is doing better than it has in years, but Sony has lost quite a bit of trust here.
Suddenly, switching to an expensive gaming PC becomes more attractive
In several posts, discussions are taking place about how the community should react to Sony’s announcement. In a Reddit thread, it is mentioned that many will probably not switch to a PS6 but rather buy a PC instead. In another thread, there is a discussion about which PC hardware would be best for a fleeing PS5 player.
It becomes even clearer in a survey, conducted by Pushsquare among its own readers. Of 6,500 people, 45% are seriously considering switching to PC. That amounts to 2,925 people. 41% of 5,233 people (2,093) say they want to switch because Sony intends to end the production of physical media. This also shows how strongly this topic currently affects the community.
High hardware prices make switching difficult: The biggest hurdle for many players or potential switchers is likely the high prices. Due to the AI boom, RAM and storage are more expensive than ever, and this is expected to remain the case for several more years.
However, with a PS6, some fear that high prices will also be noticeable there. Ultimately, one would have to choose between a lesser evil. And for many people, a gaming PC currently seems to be the more attractive option, especially if the PS6 could turn out to be a purely digital console, as Sony is already demonstrating with the PS5 Pro, where you have to buy the drive separately.
Sony’s decision to discontinue discs has been met with strong criticism, but it seems unlikely to change. This is demonstrated by the most important facility for disc production in Austria. Here, they already want to retrain all employees for new products: Many hope that Sony reconsiders the end of discs, but it might already be too late for that
