A good MMORPG should emerge from a successful Kickstarter campaign on Steam, but now it is just becoming a singleplayer title.
What kind of MMORPG is this? Books of Travels is a small MMORPG that launched in 2021. Instead of focusing on large crowds, this title is all about providing a good experience for small groups.
Particularly unique was the art style, which was designed to immerse players into a kind of artwork. Social activities such as exploration, fishing, and trading were important for the meditative gameplay.
Book of Travels was previously compared by its developers to Animal Crossing. The twist: Even though players must cooperate, there is no chat or messaging function. Each player contributes only through their actions to the common cause.

The End for the MMORPG
Why is the MMORPG coming to an end? Book of Travels was funded on Kickstarter in 2019 and had a very rocky start in 2021. The unusual gameplay made the title unattractive to MMO fans, as reflected in the low player record of 1,390 players (source: SteamDB).
The developers explain the end of their MMORPG as follows:
Book of Travels is fantastic and wonderful in many ways, but as you know, we encountered significant obstacles and problems in trying to realize it. We set out more than we could handle. We weren’t able to deliver what we aimed for and what we promised. Over time, we realized that we did not have the capacity required for such a project.
Developers of Books of Travels on Steam
What will happen to the MMORPG? The developers do not want to throw away their hard work. They are transforming the MMORPG into a singleplayer title. Instead of a hefty price of €29.99, the game will now be available for €4.99.
As a singleplayer title, mods will also be supported, allowing fans to make the game even more challenging. With an update for their game, the developers hope to preserve what they have created.
On July 31, 2026, the servers will be shut down. Until then, players can download their characters to use them offline later. Many sad but understanding fans can be found in the comments on the announcement.
For the developers of Books of Travels, the journey is coming to an end, and they have not achieved what they dreamed of. At the same time, thanks to the continuation as a singleplayer title, there is a happy ending for the players and characters, which other MMORPGs can take example from. To make this happen more frequently in the future, gamers are also getting involved in politics: Initiative wants to save your MMORPGs on Steam, celebrates first breakthrough
