Meta’s expensive subscription fee for the smart glasses has temporarily failed: After criticism, they have temporarily abandoned the fee but still intend to hold on to it. This means a subscription will still come, but it is not yet clear for what function.
In early July 2026, Meta stated, that they would charge a hefty fee for a feature of their smart glasses that allows users to hear each other more clearly. About 20 USD per month.
Now, they have temporarily shelved this idea, but do not want to completely bury the concept of the subscription fee. They explained this to the online magazine TheVerge.
But for now, no subscription for the glasses, but later again
What exactly does Meta say? In a statement to TheVerge, the company explained that for the time being, they do not want to charge a fee for the feature “Conversation Focus,” but still intend to stick to a subscription system:
The Meta AI glasses provide significant value for free, and some premium features will be available in subscription over time – with particular attention to doing everything right with “Conversation Focus.”
We have taken the feedback into account and are therefore temporarily suspending the subscription test. “Conversation Focus” remains available for early testers as part of our early access program, while we work on a better approach.
This means that there will still be a subscription feature for the Meta glasses, but Meta themselves probably do not yet know for which function.
Why was the subscription for “Conversation Focus” criticized? The feature works locally and without cloud connectivity on the glasses. Therefore, there was theoretically no reason to introduce a subscription for it. Because Meta does not need to provide either server capacity or a cloud that could potentially cost money.
This very circumstance was criticized by users and developers because they wanted to place a purely local function behind a paywall, even though it did not seem necessary.
Mark Zuckerberg and Meta, the company behind Facebook, want to create a personal superintelligence. Their biggest asset: the personal data of users. Because with this, they have an advantage over other companies that are also investing in AI: Mark Zuckerberg and Meta have a special secret weapon in the race for AI
