Curry Baker is currently celebrating great success with his horror film Obsession. The next project is already in the works and marks the return of an icon that brings fear and terror with its chainsaw.
Fans of horror movies have reason to rejoice at the moment. With Backrooms and Obsession, there are currently two genre representatives from young Gen-Z directors who have primarily gained fame through the internet.
Curry Baker, the director of Obsession, is already working on his next big project. The renowned studio A24 has onboarded him for a reboot of the classic Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
The film by Tobe Hooper, released in 1974, has since spawned eight additional films, which include sequels, prequels, or remakes.
And now another attempt is set to be made to bring the legendary killer Leatherface to the screen. Curry Baker, who is directing the project, explains what his plans are for the franchise – and what kind of film he absolutely does not want to make.
Obsession has already scared MeinMMO editor Niko – here you can see the trailer:
Horror for a New Generation
What does Baker have planned? In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the 26-year-old director spoke about the project. Although there is no script yet and details of the story are still under wraps, Baker shared the following about his approach:
I wouldn’t be interested if I didn’t believe I could find an approach that feels fresh and new while still respecting the original. The canon itself is very inconsistent, so there’s not much to stay true to except the original. I want to scare a new generation of people and make them feel: “What if you went on a road trip with your friends and this happened to you?”
Baker further explains that he wants to capture the “rawness and groundedness of the original.” In fact, Tobe Hooper’s debut film was a true indie film that, according to The Numbers, was produced with a budget of only $140 million (inflation-adjusted about $950 million) and was marked by its simple yet effective means of creation.
For comparison: Obsession by Curry Baker cost nearly $1 million to produce (via The Numbers).
As preparation, the director has closely examined the other films in the franchise and determined what he does not want in his version:
Some of these films simply revolve around a guy with a chainsaw chasing someone around. A pure chase movie just doesn’t work. They hide in a barn. That gets boring after a while. And I just don’t buy it – a chainsaw is loud, but they can’t hear it? I hate it when you watch a movie and think: “Just do this [instead].”
How exactly the rejuvenation of the franchise will succeed has not yet been revealed by Baker. But it is expected that the script will at least try to take new directions with Leatherface. What are your expectations for a reboot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.
As the script is still being written, there is currently no release date for the film. But don’t expect it before 2027, as 2028 is also possible, since Baker is still working on the completion of another film called Anything But Ghosts.
