An actually significant character was introduced in the first movie of Harry Potter, but never appeared again. The actress gives clear reasons for this.
In The Philosopher’s Stone, the character Madam Hooch actually plays an important role. After all, she is the flying instructor at Hogwarts and also oversees the Quidditch matches.
Under her watchful eyes, Harry mounts a broom for the first time and immediately gets into a conflict with Malfoy, while Madame Hooch takes Neville to the hospital wing.
The slightly eccentric teacher appears in the books in the following years as well, but she is missing in the films. This has to do with the actress Zoë Wanamaker, who portrayed the character in the first film. And with the issue of money.
Soon, it will be back to Hogwarts, including a new actress playing Madam Hooch. Here you can see the first teaser for the HBO series:
No more flying lessons
Why didn’t Madam Hooch return? As early as 2001, Zoë Wanamaker gave an interview to the Daily Telegraph, in which she talked about the circumstances of the production. The producers at Warner Bros. were “notoriously stingy” and the salary she received for the role was “terrible”.
For a return, she already made it clear back then what her demands were:
If they want me for a second [movie], they have to raise their fees. I do not believe that any of the actors came out well from it.
The actress did not reveal exact numbers. However, the amount seems to have been anything but satisfactory. And considering the great success of the first film, she wanted a fee that reflected that success for her return.
Additionally, Wanamaker stated that all actors were also digitally recorded to use them as avatars in potential video games. However, British actors would not receive royalties for that, she said:
That’s outrageous! Not even the costume designer, who designed these fantastic creations, gets royalties. That’s shocking and embarrassing!
At least Wanamaker returned to the franchise several years later. Not in any film or the play, but as the voice of Madam Hooch in the game Hogwarts Mystery. The title was released in 2018 for Android and iOS.
Would you have liked to see Madam Hooch in the films after Philosopher’s Stone? And do you think recasting would have been a good solution? There is room for your opinion in the comments. The upcoming HBO series has to deal with the issue of casting again after the first season: Harry Potter on HBO loses Ginny, now has to achieve what the films already successfully accomplished with Dumbledore
