A film is to be made based on the popular shooter Helldivers 2 by Sony but the planned lead actor drops out before filming begins.
Who is Sony losing? Sony Pictures is planning a film for its successful Helldivers 2 on PS5 and Steam. Jason Momoa was supposed to take the lead role. Most people know Jason Momoa from the series Game of Thrones as Khal Drogo. He has also appeared in the DC Universe as Aquaman.
Jason Momoa would have been a good fit in Helldivers 2, but fans will likely never get proof – or disproof – of that because: the actor is no longer part of the cast, reports Deadline exclusively. The reasons for this are unknown.
Lead actor gone, film still coming
Why does Sony need to find a replacement quickly? The film for Helldivers 2 is set to hit theaters on November 10, 2027, which is just over a year away. Not much time to find a new lead actor. However, it seems only a new lead actor needs to be found, as director Justin Li, who has worked on several films from the Fast & Furious
franchise, is still on board.
What other information is known? Since the Helldivers games do not have a real, full-length story, the film does not have a script to follow in terms of plot. Presumably, the world of Helldivers will serve as inspiration for the film. The screenwriter, by the way, is Gary Dauberman, who has written scripts for, among others, Annabelle and Until Dawn.

By the way, his role in Helldivers 2 would not have been his first appearance in a video game film. Jason Momoa appeared in the Minecraft film. In the German dubbing of the cinema hit, the Twitch streamer and YouTuber Gronkh was supposed to be heard, but fans searched in vain: Gronkh was supposed to have a big role in the Minecraft movie – now fans ask: Is he even in it?
