On the official Star Wars day on May 4th, the last two episodes of the animated series Maul – Shadow Lord were released on Disney+. In it, the Sith encounters none other than Darth Vader.
In the past, there have been fights between the two in Star Wars Legends, but not in canon. Until now.
In the series, the two Sith Lords confront each other on the planet Janix. There, Maul wants to establish a syndicate that is a thorn in the Empire’s side. Thus, Vader is sent to Janix to stop Maul.
The resulting battle is a highlight for every Star Wars fan.
Vader has learned new tricks
What does the fight look like? First, it is important to mention that it is not a classic duel. On Maul’s side fights the Jedi Padawan Devon Izara, who has her eye on Maul as a potential student. And the Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki also stands up to Vader.
It is unusual that a Jedi teams up with a Sith to fight an even greater threat.
In the fight itself, it quickly becomes clear how much stronger Vader is. He fights seemingly effortlessly and successfully deflects the attacks of his enemies – no wonder, after all, he is one of the strongest Sith Lords around. Only united do the three manage to push Vader back with a Force push.
However, this only holds him temporarily. The Sith also has a new trick up his sleeve. He appears without warning; no one had sensed the presence of his power before. Thus, he surprises his opponents and gains a crucial advantage.
Palpatine had similarly disguised himself during his time as Chancellor before the Jedi: he used this trick to conceal his own power and managed to hide the presence of the Dark Side.
What is the outcome of the fight between Maul and Vader? Soon it becomes clear that Maul has no chance against the powerful Sith Lord Vader. The Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki loses his life, which Maul uses to escape together with the Padawan Devon Izara.
While there is no dead Sith at the end, the fact that Maul escapes can be viewed as a clear triumph for Darth Vader. However, Maul did take something from the encounter: Devon Izara becomes his new student.
