The training under Darth Sidious is no walk in the park. A recent series centered around Darth Maul, however, shows how much the training to become a Sith Lord has changed and how painful it can be.
Attention Spoiler: In the article, we reveal details about two short scenes from episodes 7 and 8 of Maul – Shadow Lord. If you don’t want to know anything about it, you shouldn’t read on.
Darth Sidious aka Emperor Palpatine is not a particularly pleasant fellow. Darth Maul had to experience this firsthand. He “enjoyed” the training under the guidance of the great Sith Lord, and the current series Maul – Shadow Lord now shows what that looked like.
The current episodes 7 and 8 reveal how Maul gets into trouble and is attacked by the Empire. He barely survives the fight against two Inquisitors.
Weakened and injured, he is overtaken by visions. They lead him back to his childhood and young years and show, among other things, how Palpatine trained him.
Every mistake is harshly punished
What do the visions show? Initially, one sees how Maul is recruited by Palpatine. At first, Maul’s brother Savage Opress tried to prevent him from going with Palpatine. However, this is in vain. Maul believes he has no other choice and gives in to the Sith.
In a second vision, one gets a glimpse into the actual training. Palpatine is a strict teacher who pays close attention to ensure his student delivers the required performance. If he does not, or if he makes a mistake, Palpatine punishes him with a Force lightning.
In other words: The training must have been an extremely painful experience. Palpatine’s approach during this time was simply torture. You can watch the mentioned scenes on YouTube.
The relationship between the two noticeably suffered over the years. At the end of Episode 1, Palpatine left Maul’s dismembered body behind. From that, he was able to regenerate. During the Clone Wars, the Sith Lord sought out his former student, killed his brother Savage Opress, and dueled with Maul.
He was so filled with hatred that he resisted the powerful Sith Lord for a time. However, a strong attack knocked Maul to the ground and instilled great fear in him. He had lost the fight but was spared by Palpatine.
How did Palpatine change his training? Compared to the way the Sith trained his other students Count Dooku and Anakin Skywalker, there are differences. Physical pain was suddenly much less important. Palpatine no longer subdued his students with pain but used clever manipulation and cunning to bind them to him.
The best example is Anakin: He is disappointed with the Jedi Order and proves to be an easy victim for Darth Sidious’ psychological games. In this way, the Emperor eventually became the powerful entity as we know him. A puppeteer who has his fingers in every pie.
