The announcement of Guild Wars 3 was one of the biggest news at the Summer Game Fest 2026 and has created quite a hype among fans. But some players are concerned: What will happen to Guild Wars 2 now?
What is happening with Guild Wars? At the Summer Game Fest 2026, Guild Wars 3 was officially announced. There was of course a flashy trailer and also a beta period set for fall 2027. We have gathered all the information about the MMORPG that is known so far here on MeinMMO.
The announcement has caused excitement among fans: The trailer is currently in 12th place on the Trending Videos on YouTube, making it the hottest trailer right now. However, alongside the hype, there is also skepticism among some fans. The main questions are how different the prequel to Guild Wars 2 will be and how the MMORPG will continue.
We should get answers today, on June 6, 2026: ArenaNet announced a livestream on the YouTube channel at 18:00 German time, discussing the future of Guild Wars 2. Another stream is to follow on the evening of June 9.
Between hype and concern
What does the community say? There are currently mixed feelings among fans. Those who are excited about the announcement are really excited:
- Streamer AuroraPeachy watched the Summer Game Fest wearing a “Guild Wars” T-shirt and broke down in tears at the announcement. On YouTube, she writes: “After 14 years, this game still makes me melt into a nervous, trembling, squealing fangirl.”
- Many players who have been around for a while feel transported back to the anticipation of Guild Wars 2. Martox3560 remembers on YouTube: “I grew up with Guild Wars 1, graduated from school with Guild Wars 2, and now my child will play Guild Wars 3.”
- Even though not much can be deduced from the trailer yet, fans suspect that Guild Wars 3 will be even more action-oriented, both in terms of movement and combat, and will play significantly differently than its predecessor. pietrja writes on YouTube: MMOs have evolved so much, and I’m glad that GW3 still promises to be an evolution for the genre. They definitely make me want to be involved. Loved GW 1 + 2.”
- In the MMORPG subreddit, the salvation of the genre is even proclaimed.
Guild Wars is dead, long live Guild Wars?
However, a lot of discussion is also happening in the mega-thread on Reddit and in the English-speaking forum.
- Several players suspect that Guild Wars 3 could differ significantly from its predecessor, much like how 2 was a clear departure from the original Guild Wars. Some welcome the innovation, while others are more skeptical of the potential changes. In particular, the planned PS5 release and the trailer’s visuals are causing concern. Some find the look reminiscent of generic UE5 games or say it looks “plastic.”
- Some simply have no great interest in a new MMORPG. Ivien writes: “[…] I’m satisfied with GW2 and starting over is not appealing. I’ve been playing GW2 since 2012.” That this is by no means a solo opinion is shown by the replies to the comment.
- Mixed feelings also exist regarding the – presumably – playable races. Players are excited about the hinted Kodan, but fear that the prequel may omit two of the most interesting races: the Sylvari and Charr.
- There’s also a fundamental skepticism towards new MMORPGs. Serran1985 writes in the English forum: “This is a disaster. Think about it. How many studios have failed with MMOs in recent years? […] What do you envision for Guild Wars 3? It will fail. There’s no chance it will work.”
However, other fans counter: The negativity also existed when Guild Wars 2 was announced.
However, the biggest concern among fans is that the announcement could effectively signal the end of Guild Wars 2. Although ArenaNet has committed to the continued development of the MMORPG, which also seems sensible: if the prequel doesn’t start strongly, part 2 is still there to support the studio.
However, some players are sure that the announcement simply marks a slow descent into maintenance mode while the player base shifts to Guild Wars 3. Either way: we should know more about the future of Guild Wars 2 tonight.
