MeinMMO editor Caro just came straight from the watch party of the detailed insight into GTA 6 on Netflix – and she thanks whichever higher power has listened to her wishes, because: She got exactly what she has wanted to see for so long.
I’m still riding that high that GTA 6 gave me with 26 minutes. But my immediate conclusion after watching: The time until November 19 will really drag on. What we were shown just looks awesome.
Especially, I was really excited about one thing that I desperately needed from Rockstar: protagonists with more depth than just humor. With Jason and Lucia as a couple, I was hopeful that this choice would work out.
How nice that Rockstar on Netflix gave me exactly what I wanted.
The relationship between Lucia and Jason is more than just a story
Jason and Lucia just seemed really great to me in the preview. You see them on missions, small heists, car chases, and shootouts, but also in the apartment, picking out outfits – and they can hold hands!
In the 26 minutes, it already becomes clear that the romance in GTA 6 is not just a means to tell a story and artificially create drama; it works organically.
Lucia and Jason help each other during a mission, communicate with each other, watch each other’s backs, and organize a getaway vehicle when one of them needs it.
I think it’s great that the relationship organically weaves through several aspects of the gameplay experience. Yes, I’m also excited about the narrative, but you feel much more invested when you sense the mutual support in gameplay.
But all of this is not taken for granted – and that’s just right
As IGN reports, the romance between Jason and Lucia develops by not only fulfilling your duties and completing the main missions. You have to – just like in a real relationship – be willing to take the extra step to spend quality time together. And that’s also the case in GTA 6.
If you go shopping together as Jason and Lucia or engage in other fun couple dates (like pulling off small heists, as loving couples do), their relationship is strengthened.
However, if you ignore the text messages from the other person or forgo shared leisure time, it will negatively affect their partnership.
The step for immersion is brilliant, and it encourages you to engage more with the characters. They feel less like playable puppets, but like people with wants, fears, and feelings that can be seen or hurt. Exactly what I wish for protagonists of a good game!
