The free Update 50 has been released for Elder Scrolls Online and brings the most important innovation for the world of Tamriel since “One Tamriel” in 2016.
What’s new? Update 50 brings a free package of innovations that all owners of the base game of Elder Scrolls Online can benefit from. You can expect some of the missing content from Season 0, the optimization of existing areas, and the preparation for the upcoming Season 1.
The big highlight of Update 50 is, in our view, the new difficulty levels for open world content, as these address one of the major weaknesses of the MMORPG: ESO has long been considered too easy in many areas, especially for veterans. Now you can raise the difficulty level and earn more rewards. Playing together with other players is still possible without any issues.
A groundbreaking update like this was last given to Elder Scrolls Online for the world of Tamriel back in 2016 when the developers introduced “One Tamriel” with flexible level scaling, laying the foundation for you to play with other players anytime and almost anywhere.
What else does Update 50 bring? Other now relevant innovations include:
- the refresh of the werewolf skill line
- the new class mastery system that is meant to reward you when you stay true to the choice of abilities for your class
- a PvP veteran system that promises a variety of rewards for PvP fans
- the permanent vengeance campaign in the Alliance war of Cyrodiil
- various improvements to the player experience, such as for guild messages, transmutation stations in large crafting centers, and more
Furthermore, the developers are preparing the first content for Season 1. This includes:
- quest line about the Thieves Guild
- dynamic encounters
- favor quests
- quest line about Sheogorath
Season 1 is set to start on July 8. From then on, you can experience the first 3 of these contents. The new Sheogorath quest chain is expected to follow on July 29.
“These are super exciting innovations”
How is the community reacting to the update? In a current discussion about Update 50 on Reddit, the exchange revolves around an old problem of ESO that keeps some players away from Tamriel.
It’s about the combat system, which feels too clunky and lacking fun for many who are actually interested, making regular visits to ESO hard to justify. The developers are currently working to gradually improve the classes and skill lines (like now with the werewolf), but this process takes a long time and doesn’t seem to have a positive enough impact for critics.
- UnscriptedCryptid explains: “I really don’t think the new animations bring as much as everyone claims. The entire combat system needs a complete overhaul – as long as the abilities have no cooldowns, it will always feel like a crappy spam fest. That’s just how it is.”
- AgentAled adds: “ESO does so many things really well, offers great updates and fantastic content, but all of that is marred by the (perhaps slowly improving?) clunky combat system.”
- zombawombacomba agrees: “One of the most important aspects of MMOs (the combat) is here one of the worst I have ever seen in a game, lol.”
Outside of this discussion, Update 50 is also receiving a lot of praise.
- Gerzy_CZ celebrates: “I only played briefly today, but this difficulty level is really amazing. It feels like a completely different game. […] Completing the whole rotation without enemies being wiped out by the very first skill you press, not finishing quest bosses in one hit and instead having to use support spells – that’s pretty much exactly what I’ve been wanting for years.”
- soyass also praises: “This is one of the most extensive updates since the beginning of the year. The new leadership at ZOS has really made great progress in improving the game. […] I’m really happy that they finally listen to the player community and fix long-awaited weaknesses. Good direction!”
- polakbob is contemplating a comeback: “Thanks to the new difficulty level, I’m going to restart the game tonight for the first time in years. I used to love exploring Tamriel, but I hated the mindless challenge. I miss the danger that ESO offered at its launch. These are super exciting innovations.”
What do you think: Are you going to try out the new difficulty levels of ESO? Feel free to let us know in the comments! It’s already clear that with Season 1 a further premiere is on the horizon, namely the trip to the high seas or into the depths of the sea: Elder Scrolls Online turns you into a pirate and diver, bypassing weaknesses of underwater zones like Vashj’ir
