The survival MMO Dune: Awakening has announced a major upheaval. The developers want to completely rebuild their title and simultaneously announce the end of the MMO.
Why is the MMO being discontinued? The developers of Dune: Awakening have long since wanted players to stop seeing their survival title as an MMO. For them, this creates false expectations, as Dune: Awakening offers very little content that requires other players.
Now the developers have announced a single-player mode for their title in a major announcement. This allows players to experience everything the game has to offer – entirely without servers in a private world. The world of Arrakis remains as it is, but you will not encounter other players there anymore.
The endgame area Deep Desert will also remain completely offline. The MMO content Landsraad, where guilds and clans compete for various objectives, will be simulated in the new mode. Players can still use the system.
At the same time, PvP in the game will be completely optional at the latest with the update on September 22. Accordingly, the former survival MMO is transforming into a survival game with a shared online world. But there is even more change.

End of the story
What about the story? The developers of Dune: Awakening have advanced the story since the release in June 2025. Now they want to release the final chapter of the current story and thus conclude the story.
Here the developers promise “many hours of cinematic storytelling.” It is unclear whether the developers will continue to provide Dune: Awakening with new story content after the update on September 22.
The update could represent the final step for the survival game, or the developers might provide the title with a new story after the upcoming Dune film. Both scenarios are conceivable, while the developers are currently clearly speaking of the “final act of the first book.”
What else has been announced? Dune: Awakening is set to land on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Gamepass on September 22 with its major update. This means console players will also be able to enjoy the entire title with all its updates.
However, there is still a downside: the developers mention in a footnote that they will not connect the versions with crossplay. Only players on Xbox and the Windows Store will be able to play together.
A decision that many players in the community are heavily criticizing and accusing the developers on Reddit. They had actually been looking forward to repopulating the old servers with new players and thus reviving the game a bit.
It seems as though the developers want to finalize Dune: Awakening with this update. At the same time, the game seems to clearly side with the larger faction in the battle between PvE and PvP with this announcement, even though that wasn’t the original idea. Thus, the former survival MMO can now also be played completely without PvP. This leads to the following decision: 10 months after the release, Dune: Awakening makes the right decision to separate its conflicts
