Between Sanctuary and the Fields of Hatred, rifts break the barrier and bring fresh challenges in the form of a new monster family into the game. Additionally, you may encounter a familiar boss that can be summoned.

Rifts in Season 14 of Diablo 4 – All about Locations, Types, and Rewards
How to open rifts? Look out for guards located at skull totems. Kill them and you will open the corresponding rift.
Where to find the rifts? Rifts appear everywhere in Sanctuary, but most commonly during helltides. If you want to search for them specifically, keep an eye out in these zones. But be careful, as it can get uncomfortable quickly here since the enemy density is often already high due to active helltides.
What happens during a rift? Once a rift is opened, enemies will rush out, and you must defeat them to keep the rift open for as long as possible. You can recognize enemies coming from the rift by their mystical blue glow. If fissures appear, you must also close them. The longer you keep a rift active, the more and better rewards you can receive.
Additionally, a familiar boss can be summoned that promises you further rewards should you manage to complete the Blood Tithe Chamber. Rift goblins can also appear and randomly open additional rifts.
Are there different rifts? Yes, you can encounter 3 types of rifts:
- Normal rifts
- Found everywhere, but especially during helltides
- Swelling rifts
- Instead of a local event during a helltide
- Become stronger the longer they are open
- Colossal rifts
- Only in the Fields of Hatred south of Zarbinzet
What do you get for rifts? In addition to common loot, you receive glimmers of hope for closing rifts, which you can exchange for further loot in Zarbinzet. For this, you must visit the renown table. This also allows you to earn Madness Fragments, which are needed to craft mythical unique items at the Horadric Cube.
