With Lord of Hatred, fishing is introduced in Diablo 4 – a relaxing pastime where you can farm items in the meantime and maybe even discover a secret or two. How to unlock and use the fishing feature is explained here.
This is what fishing in Diablo is about: The second expansion, Lord of Hatred, brings several new features to Diablo 4. The feature that will likely surprise most of you is fishing. You can actually catch fish in the waters of Sanctuary if you purchase an edition of the expansion.
Fishing has been available in Diablo Immortal since 2023, where you can exchange fish for rewards in a logbook. Now it is coming to Diablo 4 and will likely excite completionists among you.
Unlock fishing in Diablo 4 and find specific fish
Here’s how to unlock fishing: Throughout the story, you will travel to Skovos, the new region of the expansion. There, fishing is introduced at early levels through a purple “main quest” – similar to the jeweler or occultist. You can hardly miss the task.
At the quest location in the south of Philios, you will meet the grumpy fisherman Shi Yugong, who complains about your noise. He challenges you to catch a fish yourself. As you succeed immediately, while he has had no luck all day, he reacts with his usual grumbling and snorting.

How does fishing work? You initiate the process through your emote wheel. If the fishing symbol is missing, you can simply customize the wheel and add the command. Once you are by a body of water, you cast the line using an emote.
Then a short mini-game begins: When a fish bites, a symbol appears in the middle of the screen. Now you just need to press any skill button to reel in the catch. This works in all water bodies – and even in lava.
How to find specific fish: At Shi Yugong, you can also take on side quests where you need to catch specific fish. One tip: Check your challenges. Fishing has its own category there, where the corresponding locations for each fish are stored.
Fishing might be more useful than you think
What’s the benefit of fishing? Currently, there are a total of 117 different fish in Diablo 4. For each of them, you will receive an achievement as soon as you “use” the catch in the consumables tab in your inventory. Once you have collected all the fish, you will receive an additional achievement including the title “Salty Angler”. For achievement hunters, this means a total of 118 new achievements. Should the fish later acquire further functions, we will update this guide.
Fish that you have already caught for your achievements can be sold at the vendor. This also applies to byproducts like old diaries, monsters, or… a cowbell. We have actually had that on the hook already.
In the last livestream before the release on April 23, the developers wore rather eye-catching t-shirts with a seemingly submerged monster and a cross between a cow and a blobfish. During the stream, it was mentioned to pay attention to what else might be lurking in the depths of the sea. Maybe the biggest secret of Diablo 4 will soon be revealed.
